What to Do Before Leaving for Winter Break


The residence halls will close on Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 6 PM for winter break, with the exception of Douglas Keen, Northeast, and Hilltopper Halls.

 

All residence halls will reopen on Friday, January 24, 2020 at 8 AM.

 


 

Select the instructions that apply to you:

1. Register for the Spring Semester 

Make sure you have your spring class schedule before you leave for the break. If you need to register, the Academic and Career Development Center has walk-in advisors available to help you.

The Academic and Career Development Center is located in the Downing Student Union in room 2141 and is open Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

2. Prepare Your Room for the Break

Please complete the closedown procedures listed below before you leave for the break:

  1. Defrost and unplug refrigerator. Prop door open to prevent mold and mildew build-up. Make sure the refrigerator is clean and dry.

  2. Unplug all electrical equipment including computers, aquariums, stereos, televisions, etc.

  3. Ensure that items are moved away from the heating unit. The filter will be changed.

  4. Remove belongings from the closet floor. This prepares the room to be sprayed for pests. If you have a wardrobe, you do not have to remove your belongings.

  5. Wash dishes.

  6. Throw away all trash and clean out the trash can. Take all trash to compactor or outside dumpster. Activate the compactor.

  7. Set room temperature to 65 degrees and the fan speed in auto -OR- at halfway between blue and red with the fan speed on low (depending on what building you live in).

  8. Close and lock windows. Turn lights off and lock your room.

  9. Check your mailbox.

You do NOT need to remove all of your belongings from your room during Winter Break. Only remove all of your belongings if you plan on checking out and not returning in the Spring Semester. 

If/when you leave for the holidays, please do the following:

  1. Throw away trash.
  2. Wash dishes.
  3. Unplug all electrical equipment including computers, aquariums, stereos, televisions, etc.
  4. Defrost and unplug your refrigerator (if leaving for an extended period of time)
  5. Remove belongins from closet floor & from in front of heating unit.
  6. According to the type of thermostat in your room, set room temperature to 65 degrees and fan on auto, OR set temperature between red and blue and fan speed on low.
  7. Close and lock windows, turn off lights, and lock your door

 

Filter Changing

Maintenance crews will be entering bedrooms and changing filters in the heating units January 6-24, 10 AM-8 PM. Please ensure all belongings are removed from in front of the HVAC unit, per university policy. 

 

Spraying for Pest Control

Occupied halls will be sprayed for pests. Exact times and dates will be posted in your hall. If you will be gone at any point during the break, please prepare your room before you leave by removing belongings from the floor, throwing away all trash, and washing your dishes.

If you are leaving WKU Housing permanently at the end of the fall semester, complete the "Intent to Vacate" form in the WKU Housing Portal as soon as possible and HRL staff will contact you with instructions:
