[Section_Value3] =>
I am the second floor girls Residential Counselor for the 2018-2019 academic year. I graduated from Trevecca Nazarene University with my Bachelors of Arts in Management and Human Resource. While attending Trevecca I worked full-time as a special education teacher assistant. I worked with students from first grade all the way to 12th grade. I enjoyed working with students in and outside of the classroom for over eleven years.

In 2013, I transitioned to boarding school education where I worked in the residential setting. I've had the opportunity to do many things I would not have been able to do in a traditional school setting. I have truly enjoyed all the schools I have worked in. Working in a school setting is my calling in life. I am looking forward to working with all the amazing adults and students here at Gatton Academy.

In my spare time I like to read a good book. I also am very close with my family and try and spend as much time as possible with them on my school breaks. When I am not reading or spending time with my family on my time off, people can usually find me watching the travel channel.

For the past 27 years, pretty much everyone in my life has called me Pokey. It is a nickname that I picked up in undergrad for being a bit of a “slow poke” on the soccer team. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and my Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology from Lee University located in Cleveland, TN. I completed my Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of South Carolina in 2005 and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Kentucky. I have over 15 years of experience working with high school and college students as a counselor, professor, and college student affairs professional.

I really enjoy working with Academy students. Their energy, passion, and creative nature makes every day new and exciting. I am privileged to have the opportunity to reach out to students and help them to grow holistically, adjust to college life and overcome challenges. The Academy students enrich my life beyond words, and I’m honored to be able to be part of their lives.

I am blessed to have a wonderful wife Shelley, and three fantastic children Xander (18), Tristan (11), and Olivia (9). I have a 12-year-old Dachshund name Puppy and a 4-year-old rescue Rottweiler, Sophie. In my spare time, I’m a sports buff. I really enjoy watching the American Football, and World Cup and Olympic soccer. I’m a big Phillies and Penn State fan, I’m the only Arizona Cardinals fan I know, and, of course, I always root for the Hilltoppers! I really enjoy spending time with my family hiking, writing/playing music, going to the beach, camping, watching movies, playing video games, and creating some fun art together. One day we hope to buy a RV and take some awesome road trips!

    [Section_Value3] =>
No two days are alike here and that is a great thing, Whether it is helping a student choose between colleges, prom dates, or just what to have for dinner, our students always keep me on my toes. While a few may refer to me as “Mom!” and I’ll usually respond with “Child!” my role is sometimes administrative, parental, pastoral, and always flexible. The Gatton Academy is truly a community that has a family-like feel. We work hard to provide students an environment in which they are more than a name and a number but a story that is being written.

I grew up in Hart County and completed a B.S. in human resources management at WKU. My path to the world of student life and working with gifted students is slightly untraditional. Following graduation, I spent five years in retail management with Walgreens drug stores in the Nashville, TN area. I have been at The Gatton Academy since we opened in August 2007. I completed my Master’s degree in Leadership Dynamics in our early years and completed a capstone project titled “Increasing Emotional Intelligence: Building Strong Student Leaders at the Gatton Academy”. I enjoy watching our students discover themselves and grow in confidence and maturity during their time here. My role at the Academy involves managing the residential side of the program. The safety and security of our students is always my top priority. Students may sometimes think my favorite phrase is “fire hazard.”

Watching students discover the things they are passionate about never gets old. Working with this population is never boring or dull. The excitement they display is contagious. I encourage our students to strive to balance their academic lives with activities that benefit their overall well-being, not just academically but physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I’ve lost over 100 pounds during the time I’ve been at the Gatton Academy and I enjoy sharing how much happier a healthy lifestyle is with our students. Learning and exploring new things is just as important for adults as it is for our students. From leading a boot camp style exercise program, taking students to church with me on Sunday morning, performing emergency plumbing work at 1am, or just providing a listening ear; each day is just as unique as our students. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a little part of their world for a time.

    [Section_Value3] =>
I am the Residential Counselor for the 3rd Floor Male Wing. Coming from Floyd County and graduating from Gatton Academy in 2013, I have since attended the University of Louisville where I earned my Bachelor’s in Psychology with minors in Music and Chinese Studies and my Master’s in College Student Personnel. I also served as a camp counselor for VAMPY 2014 and 2015. I’m very excited to be making a return to The Gatton Academy and The Center for Gifted Studies after some time away. Gatton was extremely impactful to me during my time as a student and I hope to help our new students get as much as they can during their time here.

Outside of my work in colleges and residence life, I like to play music with instruments such as violin and guitar. I enjoy singing too. I also play video games with my favorite series being Kingdom Hearts and watch animated shows such as My Hero Academia and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
