Ching Yi

Ching-Yi Lin came to Western Kentucky University in 2009 as the Violin Professional-in-Residence. She serves as Concertmaster of the Symphony and Artist Violin Faculty, and heads the Pre-College Violin/Viola Program. Active as a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Taiwan. During the past academic year, Dr. Lin has given performances and master classes at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Oslo, Norway; the University of Missouri at Kansas City; and Southeast Missouri State University. This year she will present clinics and master classes at Northwestern University, the University of Wisconsin–Superior, the University of Wyoming, and Kalamazoo College. During the summer, she will continue her international scholarship teaching at the Tuscan Retreat for Violinists and Violists as well as have a return engagement in Norway (Sommersymfonien i Kristiansand). In keeping with the spirit of Western Kentucky University’s diverse international outreach, Dr. Lin has been proactive in arranging master classes and clinics for WKU Music Students with artists from China, Germany, Poland, Romania, and Taiwan.

Dr. Lin holds performance degrees from Indiana University, where she served as assistant to the internationally renowned Professor Mauricio Fuks and taught his undergraduate and graduate students at the Jacobs School of Music. At the Pre-College level, she has been featured as an instructor at the IU String Academy, teaching violin and group lessons while working closely with her mentors, Mimi Zweig and Brenda Brenner. In 2008–09, she acted as co-researcher, violin instructor, and piano accompanist for the Fairview Project—a research project designed to assess how underprivileged first graders can benefit from learning the violin. Her other principal teachers include Fredell Lack (University of Houston), Nelli Shkolnikova (IU), and Boris Kuschnir (Vienna Conservatory).
