From Choral Conductor to Future Professor – A Life of Music, Scholarship, and Service

Name: William Mason-Walker

Undergraduate Degree: Bachelor of Music in Music Education, University of Kentucky (2016)
WKU Degree: Master of Music in Choral Conducting, Class of 2025

 

Why WKU?

When searching for a graduate program, William Mason-Walker found exactly what he was looking for in the leadership of Dr. Paul Hondorp and Dr. Lauren Whitham.

"They are the embodiment of servant leadership," William says. "It was an easy choice when deciding on a master's program."

Their musicianship, mentorship, and commitment to their students made WKU the ideal place to continue his musical and academic journey.

 

Where Is He Now?

William is currently pursuing a Doctor of Music in Music Education at Michigan State University while remaining actively involved as a performer and church musician.

He currently:

• Serves as Music Director at Grace United Methodist Church
• Sings regularly with choral ensembles throughout the Central Michigan area
• Continues advanced research and study in music education

His work reflects a passion for both music-making and preparing for a career in higher education.

 

Long-Term Goals

William hopes to combine scholarship and performance by becoming a collegiate professor of choral music education.

His goals include:

• Becoming a Choral Music Education professor at a college or university
• Creating a professional environment where research and music-making empower the next generation of music educators and scholars

Did He Expect This Path?

William says the answer is both yes and no.

"My life has always been closely centered around music and scholarship, so a doctorate was inevitable," he explains. "The biggest shock is the fact that I was able to experience music in so many incredible ways. I am excited to keep going."

 

WKU's Lasting Impact

William credits WKU with providing meaningful opportunities to teach, mentor, and collaborate—experiences that continue to influence his work today.

"Western gave me many opportunities to teach, mentor, and collaborate in ways that affect my career today," he says. "The advice and mentorship I received from the professors will live with me. I use what I learned from WKU every day!"

 

Favorite WKU Music Memory 🎶

One of William's most meaningful experiences was conducting the second half of Rutter Requiem.

"It was a pivotal moment in my career," he says. "The Requiem is one of my favorite works, and having the opportunity to conduct it is a memory I'll always treasure."

 

Advice for Future Music Majors

Persevere through the challenges.

"Your best version of you is just after that next difficult time; don't give up!"
