Bowling Green to New Mexico: A Passion for Science and Music

Why WKU?

For Trevor Hoffmann, choosing Western Kentucky University was an easy decision. An academic merit scholarship made WKU the right fit, and as a Bowling Green native already involved in several university bands and ensembles, adding a music minor felt like a natural extension of his college experience.

"I was already participating in various WKU bands and ensembles," Trevor says. "All I needed for the minor were a few theory classes and several semesters of trombone lessons."

Balancing geology and music never felt overwhelming. Since he was already deeply involved in the Department of Music, pursuing both passions allowed him to enrich his college experience without significantly increasing his workload.

 

Favorite WKU Music Memories 🎵

Among Trevor's many musical experiences at WKU, one performance stands above the rest: the Fall 2020 WKU Jazz Ensemble concert in Russell Miller Theatre.

Despite navigating the challenges and restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ensemble worked tirelessly throughout the semester to prepare a memorable performance.

"The group really worked hard during the entire semester," Trevor recalls. "The performance we gave was among the best I remember."

The experience reinforced not only his love for performing but also the resilience and camaraderie that made the WKU Department of Music such a special place.

 

Where Is He Headed Next?

Today, Trevor is pursuing a Ph.D. in Earth Science at the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology, where he is continuing his passion for geoscience research.

His long-term goal is to become a full-time Research Scientist after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at either a national laboratory or university research institution.

Music, however, remains an important part of his life. Along the way, Trevor has continued performing in university ensembles—including the Jazz Lab Band and Trombone Choir at The University of Southern Mississippi while earning his master's degree—and has performed with community concert and jazz bands in Louisville. This fall, he'll join the tuba section of a community band in New Mexico.

"When I first started college, I never imagined I'd be pursuing a Ph.D.," Trevor says. "I thought I'd finish a master's degree and work full-time for the rest of my career."

 

How WKU Helped Shape His Career

Trevor credits WKU with providing both the academic foundation and personal skills that prepared him for graduate school and beyond.

"The material I learned at WKU helped lay a strong foundation in geology that helped me get admitted to graduate school—twice," he says.

Balancing a demanding geology curriculum with a music minor also strengthened his time management skills, something he considers essential to his success as both a student and researcher.

He also sees a direct connection between music and science.

"Music teaches focus, precision, and attention to detail," Trevor explains. "Learning to work with other people in music also develops skills that help you become a better collaborator and build stronger relationships."

 

Advice for Future Music Majors & Minors

Trevor encourages students considering a music major or minor to make the most of every opportunity.

Practice consistently. "You don't want your studio teacher to hear your first notes of the day."

Get involved. Perform with as many ensembles as your schedule allows and take advantage of every opportunity to make music.

Most importantly, have fun. "It's easy to become so focused on improving that music starts to feel stressful. But the real purpose of making music is enjoyment—so enjoy every rehearsal, every sectional, every lesson, every recital, and every performance."
