From Student to String Leader – A Journey in Music Education
Name: Landon Case
Hometown: Owensboro, KY
Degrees:
- B.M. in Integrated Music Education (Vocal & Instrumental), Class of 2017
- M.M. in Orchestral Teacher Leadership, Class of 2021
Why WKU?
Landon Case found his path to WKU after meeting faculty member Andy Braddock during a master class in Owensboro. The connection was instant. “Andy made me feel valued right away,” Landon says. His decision was further solidified by the arrival of Dr. Brian St. John in 2015, who, along with other faculty members like Dr. Paul Hondorp, Dr. Matt Herman, and Dr. Robyn Swanson, played key roles in Landon’s development as a music educator.
Where is He Now?
Landon currently teaches middle school orchestra at Bowling Green Junior High School, assists in elementary feeder programs, and works with Bowling Green High School’s orchestra under Mr. Patrick O’Rourke. Beyond the classroom, he:
- Serves as an adjudicator for performance assessments
- Plays fiddle in a country band
- Leads worship at his church
- Teaches with the WKU Summer String Institute
- Performs with Orchestra Kentucky
“I truly love what I do. Middle schoolers are full of curiosity and energy—it’s a joy to teach them every day,” Landon shares.
Long-Term Goals?
For now, Landon is exactly where he wants to be—teaching, performing, and raising his three young children. But in the future, he hopes to dive deeper into arranging and composing orchestral music when life allows for a bit more creative freedom.
WKU’s Lasting Impact
Landon credits his WKU education as the foundation for both his career and personal life. “WKU is where I met my mentors, my wife, and my lifelong friends,” he says. “Professors like Dr. Robyn Swanson and Joe Stites shaped how I view education—not just as content, but as relationships. The WKU Department of Music is full of people who truly inspire.”
Favorite WKU Music Memories 🎶
- Leading the ASTA chapter and traveling to national conferences in Tampa and Salt Lake City
- Performing Carmina Burana under Dr. Paul Hondorp, featuring guest Dr. Dwight Pounds
- Playing Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet under Dr. Brian St. John
Advice for Future Music Majors:
- Observe early and often.
“Get into public school classrooms as early as you can—freshman year if possible. Don’t wait until student teaching.” - Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
“The faculty want you to succeed. They’re there to support you—use them as a resource.”
A Note from Landon:
“Education isn’t just about curriculum—it’s about people. I’m so grateful for the people at WKU who helped shape who I am today.”
