4660 Nashville Road Bowling Green, KY 42104
WKU's Agriculture Research and Education Center (AREC) is an 800 acre farm utilized by students for classes, labs, and serves as a place to gain experience in many areas of agricultural interest. Livestock enterprises consist of dairy, beef, and equine, each of which provide a solid background for both Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary careers. A variety of crops are produced including corn, soybeans, wheat, grass hay, and alfalfa, providing hands on experience for Agronomy, Plant Science, Horticulture, Turf Management, Soil Science.
The farm provides valuable research opportunities, including USDA research, faculty and student research, and corn and soybean research trials. It is also the location for the university's composting program.
The Office of Sustainability has recently partnered with AREC to begin growing a rotation of agricultural products year-round at the farm to be used specifically in WKU Dining Services. The initiative demonstrates an exciting applied learning opportunity for agriculture and horticulture students. The Office's community gardens will also begin to plant herb plots for additional use in Dining Services. This partnership aims to serve as educational opportunity to teach about the importance of sourcing food locally by collaborating with local agricultural educators.
