For more than 10 years, WKU Greek fraternities and sororities have donated food to local nonprofits as part of the annual CanStruct event, and this year’s donations to House on the Hill will exceed the organization's lifetime giving of 700,000.
“We have worked with the BG Realtors Association for the last 10 years, as they help with distribution. This [food] has been given to multiple organizations, including Feeding America and local food banks. This is the second year we have worked with BG House on the Hill,” said Andrew Rash, Associate Director of Student Activities and Greek Life. “In looking at past Greek philanthropy reports, WKU Greek chapters have donated 694,500 cans.”
According to Rash, approximately 60,000 food items were donated last year.
On Saturday (April 18) as part of CanStruct, 24 organizations will build structures from a limited number of canned goods to raise awareness for food insecurities and increase food donations. CanStruct takes place from 8:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center, while other members unload and help sort food at House on the Hill.
House on the Hill seeks to provide affordable housing in community developments and transitional housing through The Guesthouse program, as well as access to fresh foods and groceries via The Grocery program, enhancing the quality of life for low-income individuals and families in our community.
