Lighting & Sound Courses


Stage Lighting Design

Students will study the art and craft of stage lighting design in the areas of theatre, opera, dance and live musical performance. Techniques of designing light in various stage forms will be covered, as well as creative planning for specific productions. How the designer looks at light, creative thinking, and communicating with fellow theatre artists will also be explored. The class will culminate in a practical project involving the creation of a lighting design for a theatrical production in one of our theatres.

Stage Sound Design

This course is designed to introduce students to the art of sound design for the theatre. Coverage includes an introduction to sound equipment and controls, script analysis, design methodologies, research and computer-based sound editing. Assignments range from basic sound editing to creating a soundscape for a full length play.

Stage Electrics

Lighting equipment and control systems are demonstrated and the student is provided practical experience in hanging and focusing lights for the major department productions at a time other than the class period.

Design I

An introduction to the fundamental design concepts, techniques and processes common to all areas of theatre production.

Design II

An introductory course in basic elements and techniques for scenery, costumes and lighting for the theatre.

Rendering for Theatre

This one semester course covers rendering for scenic, costume, and lighting design while exploring a variety of artistic media and techniques.

 

Advanced Special Topics

Vectorworks

Taught in our state of the art computer lab, this is an introduction to the computer aided drafting program, Vectorworks, and how it can be used as a tool to create technical drawings for the stage.

Stage Lighting Design II

As a continuation of the first Stage Lighting Design class, this class focuses on the preproduction aspects involved in designing light. In this class the student will work on projects from concept and research to light plots in Vectorworks and lighting hookups in Lightwright.
