Visiting Instructor & Costume Shop Manager

Job Description

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Western Kentucky University seeks a Visiting Instructor and Costume Shop Supervisor for a 9-month contract, beginning August 16, 2021.  The successful candidate will teach 2 classes a semester. Classes may include Costume Technology, Stage Makeup, Theatre Appreciation, and other topics depending on candidate’s areas of expertise and departmental needs. This individual will also manage the department’s Costume Shop. Duties will include maintenance of costume shop facilities, equipment and supplies, supervision of student employees, lab students, and wardrobe crews, and hands-on patterning, cutting, draping, stitching and fitting as needed to meet production demands and schedules. The department plans to seek approval and funding for continuation of this position in future years.

Job Requirements

Master’s degree in Costume Technology, Costume Design, Theatre Design or Technology, or a related field. Costume leadership experience in a professional or academic shop (Shop management, Draper, Wardrobe Supervisor, etc.) is also required. Ability to lift at least 20 pounds and climb ladders and stairs.

Visiting Professional-in-Residence in Set Design

Job Description

The Department of Theatre & Dance at Western Kentucky University (WKU) seeks applications for a Visiting Professional in Residence in Set Design for a 9-month contract, beginning August 16, 2021. The successful candidate will serve as the resident set designer for the department as well as teach 2 classes per semester. Classes may include introductory design courses, Set Design, Theatre Appreciation, and other topics depending on candidate’s areas of expertise and departmental needs. This individual will also collaborate with the Technical Director to supervise and mentor student designers and technicians in scenery and props. This individual may also be asked to participate in committee work, recruiting, and other administrative responsibilities. The department plans to seek approval and funding for continuation of this position in future years.

Job Requirements

Terminal degree (Ph.D. or M.F.A.) in the field of theatre design and/or technology.  Professional experience in set design and/or set design experience at the graduate level also required.
