Costume Design & Technology Courses


Costume Design

In this course following Basic Design II, students have an opportunity to begin a more in depth exploration of costume design. Through a series of projects students develop design skills, drawing techniques, and script analysis abilities.

Costume Technology

Costume Technology is a basic introduction to sewing for theatre and dance performances. Students learn about the structure of a working costume shop, basic hand and machine sewing techniques, fabric identification, garment fitting, and simple pattern modification. In order to solidify the skills learned in class students will also spend some lab time in the costume shop.

Stage Makeup

Makeup class is a one credit course which focuses on developing student skills in the areas of makeup design and application for the stage. This class consists of practical application of stage makeup combined with readings, quizzes, and short homework assignments. 

Stage Makeup Topics

This course explores stage makeup  in greater depth and teaches the fundamentals of professional makeup practice.  Topics covered vary but may include character work, wounds, fantasy and period makeup.

 

Advanced Topics Classes

Advanced courses in costume design and technology are offered yearly and are typically created around the areas of interest for current students. These classes may cover draping, flat patterning, advanced construction techniques, millinery, fabric modification, costume craftwork, or theatrical rendering. Past courses have included mask making and construction of period undergarments.

Advanced Costume Technology

Topics covered in this advanced continuation of Costume Technology include draping, pattern alteration, and historic research.

Rendering for Theatre

This one semester course covers rendering for scenic, costume, and lighting design while exploring a variety of artistic media and techniques.
