Message from Provost Stevens, EVP Howarth and VP Kuster - Student Workers

Dear Department Heads, Deans, Directors, Unit Leaders:
With a recent change to federal regulations around paying our federal work study students, we now have the ability to pay students that are not performing their typical work assignments. While this is excellent news for our students who continue to adjust to many changes including financial hardships, we have much work to be accomplished that can be completed remotely. If you are interested in keeping your students on the payroll but do not have work for them to do at home, the Division of Enrollment and Student Experiencing is conducting a postcard writing campaign and virtual mentoring initiative to engage with current students. Knowing that peer-to-peer engagement is critical to student success, your student workers are welcome to participate in this initiative. Student worker supervisors may contact Dr. Lynne Holland at email@example.com for additional information. The goal of the #WKUDifference Engagement Initiative is to demonstrate that WKU still cares, we are always here to help now, and are excited about our students’ return in the future.
Since we have also spent our annual allocation of federal dollars any remaining student pay must be covered through institutional unit budgets. Because these expenses will be charged directly to the respective units, these unit leaders, in consultation with the applicable college deans, or senior divisional leader, shall determine whether students should continue to be paid.
One final note, student hours should continue to be reported to the Office of Payroll following customary procedures.
