Dr. Nicholas Brake Honored at WKU Annual Summit Awards

Dr. Nicholas L. Brake was presented with the 2018 Volunteer of the Year award on behalf of WKU in Owensboro last night (Oct. 25) at the 18^th Annual WKU Summit Awards.

Dr. Brake is the Superintendent of the Owensboro Public Schools. Under his leadership, the system’s student enrollment has exceeded 5,000 students for the first time in more than 20 years. He has successfully redirected resources to support instruction, added new teachers while decreasing overall staff, lessened the share of dollars going to administration, and increased teacher pay, all while maintaining a healthy district fund balance.

“Dr. Brake has been a valuable friend to WKU in Owensboro for many years,” said Dr. Beth Laves, Associate Vice President, Extended Learning & Outreach.

“He has served on the advisory council, taught in the Educational Doctoral program through the Wallace Grant and provided support and encouragement to countless WKU students in Owensboro.”

WKU President Tim Caboni presented the award during the annual ceremony, hosted by the College Heights Foundation, WKU Alumni Association and WKU Foundation. The Summit Awards are held on the Thursday evening of WKU Homecoming Week and is an opportunity to honor WKU volunteers who make an impact on the University.
