Dr. Sarah Bonis Selected as Chair of the Department of Psychology

WKU’s College of Education and Behavioral Sciences (CEBS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sarah Bonis as the Chairperson of the Department of Psychology, effective July 1, 2026. Dr. Bonis, who has served as the department's acting Co-Chair for over a year, brings a wealth of clinical expertise and administrative experience to the permanent role.
Dr. Bonis joined the WKU faculty in 2017 after earning her Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of Houston. A licensed psychologist and nationally certified school psychologist, she is a recognized leader in regional K-12 and early childhood education, specifically in supporting the academic, mental, and behavioral health of students.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Bonis serves as the co-Principal Investigator of Project THRIVE, an interdisciplinary preparation grant. In her new role, she aims to prioritize faculty development by expanding opportunities for external research funding and training pursuits. Her appointment follows several successful years as the coordinator of the school psychology graduate program.
The university also extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Steve Wininger for his 11 years of dedicated leadership. Alongside the late Dr. Derryberry, Dr. Wininger oversaw a decade of significant transformation, including:
- The development of new departmental structures.
- Substantial growth in student enrollment and retention.
- The launch of new academic programs.
- Enhanced scholarly productivity and applied research opportunities for Hilltoppers.
Under Dr. Bonis’ leadership, WKU Psychology remains committed to preparing the next generation of mental health professionals,researchers, and community change agents.
