Interpersonal violence (IPV) is prevalent in today’s society and those dangers can increase during the COVID-19 pandemic.  With personal movement limited and, at times, people confined to their homes, concerns about a potential increase in IPV occurred. Stay-at-home orders, intended to protect the public and prevent widespread infection, left many IPV victims trapped with their abusers. Attend this session to explore how Interpersonal Violence (IPV) like dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking can look like in 2021 with the many changes with technology, social climate, and a pandemic.

Sometimes when a student provides a Faculty Notification Letter (FNL) it causes stress for the faculty member. How do I accommodate the student? Can I discuss their disability with them and their needs? Is an FNL a "free pass" to open-ended "accommodations?"  This session will provide techniques/strategies to start that "conversation" with students to ensure the accommodation process is clear from both the student and faculty perspective.  Open communication is the key for an equal opportunity for success.

A panel discussion about how to stay calm and focused when talking with students that are distressed.  How to connect students to the counseling center and/or other resources, if needed, will be discussed as well

This session will offer attendees an opportunity to learn some of the signs that a person might be suicidal and how to help connect the them to professional help

Students registered with the SARC may present a Faculty Notification Letter (FNL) indicating a need for communication access accommodations such as Live Transcription, Closed Captioning and/or Sign Language Interpreting. In this session, we will define and describe various accommodations that support communication access (i.e., deaf and hard-of-hearing) for students. We will also explain roles and responsibilities related to supporting students with these needs.

To work with emotionally distressed students effectively, first of all, we need to be able to help ourselves and take care of our own emotional reactions to them. Attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about emotions, how they function, and how to regulate them with a dialectical approach, mindfulness-based skills, and cognitive-behavioral techniques.
