Description: Since 2019, scientists and students led by paleontologist JP Hodnett have documented a rich record of ancient sharks and related cartilaginous fishes within the rock layers of the Mammoth Cave System. Some horizons have more than 50 species of sharks, some never before described. The Park's shark assemblages are a benchmark in understanding how marine vertebrates adapted to changing conditions as Pangea began to form some 345-325 million years ago.
