Have you ever wondered what some of the benefits are to studying mathematics at WKU? Are you unsure of what to do after graduation? A great resource for answers to these questions are the people who have been in your shoes before! In the Pi Mu Epsilon Math Alumni Speaker Series (PME MASS), WKU Mathematics alumni speak about their career paths and how studying mathematics at WKU has been beneficial to them. Each event ends with a Q&A session.
We are pleased to announce our final speaker of the semester, Dr. Bruce Kessler (BA ‘89), a Data Integration Specialist at Lifeskills, Inc. Dr. Kessler will be speaking to us on Tuesday, October 14, at 4:00 PM in COHH 3119. See the picture below and the attached PDF for more information!
- Location: Kelly Thompson Hall
- Time: 8:00pm - 9:30pm

The WKU Department of Physics & Astronomy will host “Nightmare on Physics Avenue” from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 28, in Kelly Thompson Hall on the WKU campus (next to the Hardin Planetarium). Free for the public, this event will feature Halloween-themed science activities and demonstrations. Wrapped candies will be provided by the Physics & Astronomy Department (while supplies last), and the one and only Big Red will be in attendance!
The activities begin at 5:30 p.m. at the entrance to Kelly Thompson Hall (next to the 12-foot skeleton!) Guests will walk up and through the second floor, experiencing physics-based thrills centered on Halloween scares. Physics students and instructors will explain the underlying science of how these demonstrations and activities work, and there will be opportunities for WKU students to earn points by scanning a QR code located within the tour. These points can then, with permission of their instructor, be used for extra class credit. The event continues until 7:30 p.m.
Professor of Physics (and Crypt Master) Dr. Gordon Emslie explained: “There will be surprises and delights, and spooks around every corner. We have hair-raising – literally – machines that Dr. Frankenstein would have wished he had.” He added: "We want to emphasize the Halloween theme, so we will all be in costume, and we hope many of our guests will also come dressed for fun. We welcome guests of all ages, and we promise a lot of fun for all.”
The “Nightmare on Physics Avenue” event is sponsored by the Society of Physics Students, the Hilltopper Astronomy Club, and Women in Physics.
