Strode Named Third Director of Gatton Academy at WKU

Dr. Derick Strode will be returning to The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University as the program’s third director. Strode will start in this new role July 13, succeeding Dr. Lynette Breedlove who has led Gatton since 2014 following Dr. Tim Gott’s tenure.
Strode previously served at The Gatton Academy in Academic Services from 2008 to 2021 as Assistant Director and Coordinator of Research, Internships, and Scholarships. Since, he has served as the Director for WKU’s Regional Campuses. The Gatton Academy’s commitment to research, study abroad, and internship opportunities is rooted in Strode’s foundational work during Gatton’s early years.
Strode holds a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership, two master’s degrees in English and Student Affairs in Higher Education, and a bachelor’s degree in English from WKU. He has also previously served as an International Student Advisor and Admissions Counselor at WKU.
“It is a thrill and honor to be chosen as Gatton’s third director,” Strode said. “I look forward to leading the wonderful work of the program forward for Kentucky, getting to know the current students, and reconnecting with alumni and program supporters.”
Under Strode’s leadership, WKU’s regional campuses have seen a 34% enrollment growth in five years and opportunity in the Commonwealth has expanded though regional dual credit and early college initiatives. With a career-long track record, Strode has been a champion for student success and experiential learning.
Strode has published and presented on work in specialized STEM schools, global learning, and student mentorship. Strode has been recognized as an America’s Languages Fellow by the American Councils for International Education, Regeneron Teacher of Merit, University of Chicago Outstanding Educator, and Outstanding Doctoral Graduate by WKU’s Educational Leadership Doctoral Program.
In an announcement to WKU’s faculty and staff, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Bud Fischer shared,
“As The Gatton Academy continues its tradition as one of the nation's premier residential programs for gifted and talented high school students, I am confident that Dr. Strode's experience, vision, and dedication will position the Academy for continued excellence and innovation for its next twenty years.”
About The Gatton Academy: Established in 2007, The Gatton Academy is Kentucky’s first residential two-year program for gifted and talented juniors and seniors. The Gatton Academy’s students enroll as juniors and are full-time WKU students pursuing their interests in advanced science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Gatton Academy is a recipient of the 2022 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from Insight Into Diversity Magazine and the Innovation Partnership Award from the National Consortium for Secondary STEM Schools.
