WKU welcomed aspiring first-generation college students to campus for the annual First-Gen High School Summer Camp, a three-day welcoming experience designed to help participants build confidence, develop leadership skills and gain valuable insight into the college experience.
The camp brought together high school juniors and seniors who would be among the first in their families to earn a college degree. Throughout the program, participants engaged in hands-on activities, interactive workshops and fun team-building exercises focused on college preparation, academic success and personal growth.
Campers connected with WKU faculty, staff and current first-generation students who shared their experiences and provided guidance on navigating the potentially overwhelming transition to higher education. Sessions included topics such as financial aid, campus resources, academic planning and student involvement opportunities.
Participants said the camp helped them feel more prepared and confident about not just their college journeys, but about themselves as well. “I learned that being a first-generation student doesn't mean I'm alone,” said one student. “It showed me that college is not impossible for me and gave me lots of confidence about me and my future.”
In addition to learning about college readiness, students explored WKU’s campus, stayed in residence halls and built relationships with camp counselors who share similar educational goals and experiences.
For many of the participants, the camp provided a firsthand look at college life while fostering a sense of community and belonging. By the end of the program, campers had developed stronger self-confidence, expanded their knowledge of higher education opportunities and created connections that will support them throughout their educational journeys.
The camp concluded June 17 with a banquet recognizing participants for their hard work, growth and engagement throughout the program. The celebration gave students the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and achievements while sharing the milestone with their peers, counselors and WKU staff.
WKU’s commitment to first-generation student success extends beyond the camp experience through year-round programs, resources and initiatives that help students thrive academically and personally.
