Western Kentucky University will once again host its First-Gen High School Summer Camp this June, offering Kentucky high school students the opportunity to experience college life, build confidence and learn more about navigating higher education as first-generation students.
The 2026 camp will take place June 14–17 for first-time campers, with a special one-day returning camper workshop scheduled for June 17. This free residential camp is designed for students who would be considered first-generation college students. High school sophomores, juniors and seniors in the fall of 2026 are eligible to apply.
Hosted through WKU’s F1rst Gen initiative, the camp introduces students to college life through interactive workshops, campus experiences, team-building activities and sessions focused on financial aid, admissions, academic success and personal strengths. Participants will stay on campus, eat in WKU dining facilities and connect with current students, faculty and staff who support first-generation student success.
“The two most memorable activities were the water balloon fight and the electives. The one [lesson] I’ll take with me is considering all the classes in visual arts and performance,” said a student who attended last year’s camp.
Housing, meals and all camp activities are provided at no cost to participants. The camp gives students a hands-on introduction to campus life while helping ease concerns about the transition to college. Campers will participate in activities ranging from academic exploration and leadership development to social events and campus tours.
More than 4,000 current Hilltoppers identify as first-generation students, representing approximately 31% of the university’s student population.
Applications are now open, and space is limited. Thirty slots are available for first-time campers. Interested students can complete an interest form online, after which a parent or guardian will receive the official application materials. Completed applications are due before June 7.
