This year, WKU Libraries recognizes Skylar Vacanti and Taylor Niggl as recipients of the 2026–2027 Connie Foster Student Scholarship.
The scholarship recognizes student library employees who demonstrate exceptional dedication to their academic pursuits while contributing meaningfully to the mission of Western Kentucky University. Established in 2017, the award honors the legacy of Connie Foster, who served the university for 41 years, including as dean of libraries from 2011 to 2017, and played a key role in the development of TopSCHOLAR.
Skylar Vacanti, a senior from Louisville, Kentucky, is pursuing an interdisciplinary course of study in Chinese, Spanish, and psychological sciences. As a first-generation college student, Vacanti describes her academic journey as one driven by curiosity and a desire to explore the world through both language and science.
“This scholarship enables me to focus on my studies without the financial stress of tuition being such a major burden,” Vacanti said. “It also motivates me, knowing others believe in my ability to succeed.”
Vacanti began working at WKU Libraries as an Evening Security Student Assistant. She values the environment the library provides, describing it as both peaceful and enriching. “I enjoy being able to work with people with different perspectives,” she said. “It makes the job feel more meaningful.”
Through her role, Vacanti has developed skills in navigating library systems, utilizing research databases, and understanding the organization of library resources. She has also contributed to Access Services projects, including inventory work. Looking ahead, she plans to complete a capstone year in Taiwan through WKU’s Chinese Flagship Program, where she will study and intern while fully immersing herself in the language and culture.
Taylor Niggl, a senior nursing major from Lebanon, Tennessee, is the second recipient of the scholarship. She is preparing for a career as a registered nurse and is passionate about caring for patients during some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives while supporting their recovery.
“Winning this scholarship allows me to reduce my workload and dedicate more time to my studies,” Niggl said. “It’s encouraging to know that my work has made an impact.”
Niggl also works as an Evening Security Student Assistant at WKU Libraries. She credits the supportive environment with helping her balance the rigorous demands of nursing school, including early morning clinicals.
“My favorite part about working at the library is that it creates a great environment for students,” she said. “It allows me to study, stay active during my shifts, and earn income at the same time.”
In addition to her academic and professional goals, Niggl is actively involved in mentoring younger students through Bible study and enjoys working at Spencer’s, a popular coffee shop located in The Commons at Helm Library. After graduation, she plans to begin her nursing career while continuing to serve her community.
Jessica Simpson, Evening Library Assistant in Access Services and supervisor to both students, emphasized the importance of student workers in maintaining library operations.
“Our security student assistants are crucial to being open so late in the evening,” Simpson said. “They conduct patrol rounds every hour, ensuring all our patrons are studying in a safe environment while also gathering statistics that help us improve services.”
Simpson noted that both Vacanti and Niggl are fast learners who were recommended by their peers and have demonstrated strong work ethic and dedication. Both students also regularly spend time in the library outside of their scheduled shifts, reflecting their commitment to their studies.
As both recipients continue their academic and professional journeys, their dedication inside and outside the library highlights the important role student employees play across campus. Their stories reflect the spirit of WKU while showcasing the opportunities made possible through endowment scholarships like the Connie Foster Student Scholarship.
