Muscle of the Month: FITNESS CENTER ULTRA MARATHON

  • Location: Fitness Center
  • Time: 6:00am - 10:30pm

An ultra marathon is a race defined as any running event longer than the traditional marathon race distance of 42 kilometers, or 26.1 miles. Every year, millions of people participate in these races across the nation. Running and walking are great cardiovascular exercises, targeting all the major muscle groups of the legs. Cardiovascular exercise promotes a healthy heart, lungs, and vascular system. This month, challenge yourself and begin getting in shape for the summer by running and/or walking as many miles as possible on any of the treadmills in the Fitness Center!

Rules:

  • Notify a FC Attendant before you begin
  • Use any treadmill in the Fitness Center
  • Ellipticals, bikes, and the track do not count for this challenge
  • When you finish, alert a FC Attendant to record your miles on the MOM board
  • Participate as many times as you can
  • The winner will be the person who completes the most miles throughout the month of April
  • The male and female who complete the most miles will win a $15 Mellow Mushroom Gift Card
  • Each time you participate, your name will be entered into a raffle for one of two $10 Mellow Mushroom Gift Cards
  • Participate at least twice in the month to receive WellU® credit

Arkansas Programming Conference

  • Location: Horse Shoe Canyon Ranch, AR
  • Time: All Day

The Arkansas Adventure Programming conference is a student oriented programming weekend for individuals who want to connect with other outdoor educational enthusiasts. Conference attendees from the state of Arkansas can share ideas and practices while attendees from neighboring states can learn about what Arkansas has to offer. Whether you are a part of a seasoned outdoor program or thinking about starting a program, Arkansas Adventure Programming Conference is for you!  The conference is located at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch, home to over 300 bolted climbing routes and over 130 bouldering problems.  Located next to the Buffalo River, Horseshoe Canyon Ranch and the surrounding area is a mecca for climbing, paddling, hiking, disc golf, and cycling.

Topper Fitness Master

  • Location: Fitness Center
  • Time: 5:00pm - 7:30pm

The Topper Fitness Master is a muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility competition that will be held in the Fitness Center. Each event (pushup, 1.5 mile run, sit-and-reach test) has a set amount of points related to the event, the male and female participant with the most awarded points will be crowned the winner. In other words, the more push-ups you do, the faster you run, and the better your flexibility is the better chance of winning. Everyone who participates will be able to see how their fitness levels compare to the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines.

All participants must do as many push-ups as possible, run 1.5 miles as fast as possible, and sit-and-reach as far as possible. 

Male and female winners will receive a $10 Wal-Mart Gift Card. Raffle prizes will be available.

Sign up for the Topper Fitness Master on April 1st! Walk-ins are welcome, but subject to availability. To make an appointment, or for more information, stop by the Health and Fitness Lab, room 20A in the Preston Center.

All participants must sign a consent form/waiver.

Rules:

Push-ups

  • Males- (Regular Push-Up.) Do as many correct form push-ups as possible with a continuous effort. There is no rest position and two incorrect push-ups will result in the test being terminated.
  • Females- (Modified Push-Up.) Do as many modified (on the knees) form push-ups as possible with a continuous effort. There is no rest position and two incorrect push-ups will result in the test being terminated.

 1.5 Mile Run

  • Run 1.5 miles as fast as possible either on a treadmill in the fitness center or the track upstairs (7.1 laps.)

Flexibility Test (Sit-and-Reach)

  • This test involves sitting on the floor with legs stretched out straight ahead. Shoes should be removed. The soles of the feet are placed flat against the box. Both knees should be almost fully extended and pressed flat to the floor. With the palms facing downwards, and the hands on top of each other or side by side, the subject reaches forward along the measuring line as far as possible. No jerky movements and hands must be even with each other (not one further than the other.)
  • Only two tries will be allowed, with the furthest sit-and-reach counting.

Free Bike Assessments

  • Location: East side of the Preston Center
  • Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Stop by and let the friendly ORAC staff check out your bike for free.  We will conduct a thorough assessment of your bike for you.  You will walk away with an idea of the cost to fix your bike if needed, or info and general tips on how to make your bike run more smoothly.  We will also show you where you can work on your bike on campus for FREE!

Bike Maintenance Clinic

  • Location: Preston Center

The WKU Bike Shop will be putting on a clinic to teach participants how to repair most problems that they may encounter while out on a bike ride.  Stop by and learn how to make it home the next time you encounter a problem cycling.  This clinic is limited to 10 participants so sign up today; pre-registration at ORAC required.

Join ORAC as we visit the home of Bluegrass music and founder Bill Monroe’s birthplace in Rosine, KY.  Friday night we will spend time in the tiny town of Rosine, eating fried catfish, dance to live bluegrass, and camp next to the Rough River.  Saturday we will canoe down the Rough River viewing some beautiful Kentucky countryside.
