International Collaborations are important for research, development, and connections in academics. However, it is important to be aware with whom, what purpose, and on what project you are collaborating with. The purpose of Research Security with International Collaboration is not to inhibit or stop collaborations but make it safe for you, the institution, and the research you are working on.

These questions you should ask yourself when you are considering formal collaboration with others. Formal collaboration entails exchanging data and ideas with the intention of producing a publication, presentation, patent, etc. 

1. Is the collaborator or their current institution on the Restricted Parties List? 

• If this is unknown please reach out to ori@wku.edu for assistance to check this for you. 

2. Is the collaborator a citizen or resident of a Sanctioned Country?

3. Does the collaborator work for a high-risk military institution?

4. Does the collaborator have recent publications from institutions on the Restricted Parties List?

5. Do you know all of the people that will be participating in the collaboration and be listed in publications?

It is very important to know who has access to your research and labs. Take a look at the questions below to screen those in your labs:

1. Where are the visitors funds coming from to cover their travel?

2. Do you have any sponsored work that will be occurring while the visitor is present?

• Is any of this work restricted?

3. Will the visitor be involved in your ongoing research?
