Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Research

⇐Back to Research Security

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has grown significantly and may serve as a valuable research tool. AI technologies can enhance efficiency by reducing the burden of routine and labor-intensive tasks, enabling researchers to devote more time to their fields of study. It is important to note that potential conflicts may arise when using AI. Expectations and restrictions may vary by sponsor and publisher. Consult with individual sponsors and publishers for guidance for use in grant proposals, peer review, and publications.  For example, NIH prohibits the use of generative AI in its peer review process.  Many publishers require transparency and disclosure when AI-assisted technologies are used in the research, writing, or publication process.

The use of AI-assisted technologies does not change researchers' obligations under established standards for the responsible conduct of research. Researchers remain accountable for the accuracy, validity, and integrity of AI-assisted outputs and must comply with all relevant research integrity policies and requirements.

For more information on best practices and considerations of the use of AI in research, see the NIH Artificial Intelligence in Research: Policy Considerations and Guidance
