Researchers who engage in any of the following activities below will need to submit an IBC application:
- Recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids: In the context of the NIH Guidelines,
recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids are defined as:- (i) molecules that are constructed by joining nucleic acid molecules and
can replicate in a living cell; - (ii) nucleic acid molecules that are chemically or by other means
synthesized or amplified, including those that are chemically or otherwise
modified but can base pair with naturally occurring nucleic acid
molecules; - (iii) molecules that result from the replication of those
described in (i) or (ii) above.
- (i) molecules that are constructed by joining nucleic acid molecules and
- Agents known to infect plants, humans, or animals (including but not limited to
bacteria, viruses, fungi, rickettsia, protozoa, or parasites) - Select Pathogenic Agents and/or Toxins : Biological select agents and toxins are
a subset of agents that the United States Departments of Health and Human
Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA) have determined to have the potential to
pose a severe threat to public health and safety, to animal or plant health, or to
animal or plant products. - All work involving use of human-derived or non-human primate materials, (i.e.
blood, body fluids, tissues or cell lines) - Human gene therapy
- Culturing of microorganisms
Please complete and forward your application to the Office of Research Integrity at ori@wku.edu with any supporting materials.
This should be completed for any changes, modifications, or the extension of time for your project. If you application has expired, all research should be stopped until an extension has been approved. Please forward your continuing review to the Office of Research Integrity at ori@wku.edu with any supporting materials.
