The Kentucky Supreme Court is coming to WKU on March 11 and 12 for a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the judicial process in action. Students and community members will have the opportunity to observe live oral arguments and see how appellate cases are argued and decided.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, and at 10:00 and 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12. All cases will convene in the Eva and Jim Marten’s Alumni Center, Robertson-Feix Ballroom. Attorneys representing each side will have 15 minutes to make their arguments, and the court can grant additional time. Attorneys will have the opportunity to emphasize legal points, and the justices will ask questions about the case to help clarify the parties’ arguments. While there are only 15 minutes awarded to each side, oral arguments tend to last between 45 to 60 minutes. Holding the oral arguments in communities is an opportunity to educate the public on the work of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Branch.

At 4 PM on March 11, students and members of the local Bar Association are invited to a catered meet and greet in Chandler Hall, followed by a panel discussion where Justices and law clerks will share insights about the Court, public service, and pathways to legal careers.

As the Court travels the state during renovations to its Frankfort facilities, WKU joins institutions such as the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky in hosting this distinguished event. This is a rare opportunity to engage directly with the Commonwealth’s highest court.

All are welcome.
