Stickwork at WKU - Patrick Dougherty
WKU’s Cultural Enhancement Series and the Kentucky Museum are proud to host award winning artist Patrick Dougherty in October 2018 on WKU’s campus in Bowling Green, Ky. Dougherty creates large scale environmental sculptures made from intertwined tree saplings. His next installation will be located in front of the Kentucky Museum. We invite you to visit the site anytime during construction or to help to build.

Volunteer shifts are 4 hours, morning shift is 8am-12pm and afternoon shift is 1pm-5pm. There are 2 phases of the project: 1) During the harvest phase (off and on campus) groups of 10 or more volunteers are needed per shift; 2) During the construction phase (on campus) up to 5 volunteers per shift are needed.
Volunteers will be assigned to various chores:
Harvest Phase Oct 1-3: cutting, bundling, tying, and carrying to the truck at the harvest site off campus. Stripping leavings at the construction site on campus. The harvest phase should take three days.
Construction Phase October 4 - 19: weaving under the artist’s direction, fetching bundles of sticks, and cleaning up each evening. Some volunteers must be comfortable working on scaffold.
Volunteers must be 18 years or older. No specific skills are needed other than enthusiasm, physical stamina, and the ability to follow directions. Videos and photos will be taken during the entire process and are subject to use by WKU and the artist.

Volunteer dates and time slots available: (AM is 8 – 12 and PM is 1 – 5)
Buildings slots are now full. Please call the museum if you want to be on the wait list.
We do need volunteers for helping with the leaf stripping Monday, through Wednesday, October 8 through 10 between the hours of 8-12 and 1-5. Stop in to help for 30 minutes or a couple of hours.
Just swing by the Kentucky Building to help. There will be a staff member or volunteer available to provide a waiver and instruction.
To sign up please complete the following steps:
- Call the Kentucky Museum at 270-745-2594, Monday-Friday 8am-4pm.
- Provide your name, 800#, and an email address you check regularly.
- Visit the Kentucky Museum by August 30 to confirm your appointment in person and sign a waiver form. You must be at least 18 years old to volunteer. If you do not personally confirm your appointment at the Kentucky Museum by August 30 you will lose your spot.
