The Political Science Department wrapped up Leaders in Law. This summer program gives high school students an opportunity to explore the legal field and the Professional Legal Studies major. The camp began with an exhilarating start as high school students engaged in captivating break-out escape rooms, designed specifically to challenge their understanding of the legal field. Professor Shadoan and Professor Truxal worked hard to curate exciting and challenging activities for students. Student volunteers from the Pre-Law Association also joined in on the fun by dressing up as characters for the breakout rooms. Volunteers also provided wisdom and advice for the high schoolers who are seeking colleges and the legal field. Later in the day, students listened to guests, including Representative Kevin Jackson, Ky. Court of Appeals Judge Jacqueline Caldwell, and Chief U.S. District Judge Greg Stivers. This enlightening panel session posed thought-provoking questions, granting students invaluable insights into the legal profession. Questions ranged from law school experiences to campaigning for office. It was truly an honor to be in the presence of such distinguished individuals, further enriching the experience.
Gaining a comprehensive understanding of court systems constitutes a crucial aspect of the legal system. During the second day of camp, students were afforded an invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in downtown Bowling Green. Engaging in activities such as visiting a private law firm, observing court proceedings, and exploring the inner workings of a jail, the students were granted a captivating glimpse into the potential futures that await them. By exposing students to various legal environments, the program aims to enhance their understanding of the inner workings of the legal field and build their confidence. Dynamic questions and conversations gave students insight into potential options for future careers. Leaders in Law is committed to nurturing the knowledge and experience of high school students in the legal field. Exploring the court system effectively creates an environment where their growth is fostered.
On the final day of camp, students were presented with thought-provoking debate topics, fostering dynamic conversations. Such activities play a pivotal role in nurturing meaningful discourse. Proficiency in the art of debating is an essential part of a lawyer's success. Leaders in Law works to equip students with the skills to effectively curate arguments. To further enrich the students' experience, a Q&A panel was organized, featuring law practitioners Ena Demir, Rebecca Simpson, Colton Givens, Blake Hornal, Aquesha Daniels, Taylor Gregory, Wynter Parker, Billie Wilson, and Madison Whittaker. Their insightful contributions gave the students an invaluable opportunity to gain wisdom and encouragement from experienced legal professionals. Insight into dealing with school loan debt, confidence in law school, and the power of determination were just some of the many topics discussed. Students were able to engage in conversations that encouraged curiosity as they continue to explore their futures. These panels are designed to develop the students' critical thinking and communication skills. Lastly, dedicated volunteers showcased the intricacies of mock trial, concluding the camp with a delightful blend of education and laughter.
