Dr. Farhad Ashrafzadeh Receives OCSE Faculty Award for Excellence in Research & Creative Activity

Dr. Farhad Ashrafzadeh from the School of Engineering and Applied Science is the recipient of the 2019-2020 OCSE Faculty Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activity. After 15 years of experience in applied research at the Whirlpool Research and Development Center in Michigan, Dr. Ashrafzadeh joined the WKU faculty in 2012. He then was named the Greulich Chair in Energy Systems in 2014. He moved from industry to academe to further his passion for sharing knowledge, learning from students and colleagues, and developing successful professionals. Dr. Ashrafzadeh has long had a vigorous research group and founded the Center for Energy Systems (CES) in July 2018 where there are now consistently over 20 students each semester who engage in work on a variety of funded projects. The work has sponsors ranging from the National Science Foundation to Samsung Electronics and Tempur-Sealy International. His strong success in pursuit of funding has earned Dr. Ashrafzadeh a spot in the WKU $1M Club. The CES is characterized by having student-centered applied research that is being done exclusively by undergraduate students in a fully industrial operational model that employs the best practices of industry in project management and execution. Students graduating with any significant time working at the CES have an extraordinary placement rate and successes in industry and graduate schools.
