The Mahurin Honors College Admission Overview

How do I Apply?

All scholars interested in applying to the Mahurin Honors College (MHC) must be first admitted to WKU for general admission. Remember to complete your WKU Application for admission early. Learn more about the WKU application and deadlines on our admissions website.

The MHC application is a supplemental application completed after you have been admitted to Western Kentucky University in your student portal. Log-in with the email and password you used to create your WKU application, and you'll be able to complete your MHC application in the same portal. You can save your work as you go along, and we recommend completing the essays separately and then to paste/copy them into the available space. If you plan to use the CommonApp, you will be able to migrate your application and contents toward your MHC application.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Strength of writing samples
  • Level of curricular and co-curricular involvement (i.e., clubs, sports, leadership, full- or part-time work)
  • Academic quality (i.e., course rigor and academic GPA)

Note: As of August 1, 2021, the MHC no longer requires an ACT or SAT score for admission consideration.

Selection Timeline:

  • December 15 - preferred application deadline for high school seniors starting WKU in Fall 2025; or for transfers seeking admission to MHC for Spring 2025
  • March 1 - secondary application deadline for high school seniors starting WKU in Fall 2025
  • July 15 - final deadline for high school seniors starting in Fall 2025 or transfer students starting in Fall/Winter 2025

By completing the supplemental application for MHC admission consideration, the MHC review committee (composed of WKU staff, faculty, and MHC alumni) will review it using a holistic review rubric.

Special Notes:

  • First time first year students who are accepted to the Mahurin Honors College are eligible to take ANY course with an Honors designation.
  • First time first year students who are not accepted to the Mahurin Honors College for the 2024-2025 academic year may still enroll in Honors courses in their first semester at WKU if they have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher and then reapply for honors admission consideration for the next academic year as an upper-level internal transfer.

The Mahurin Honors College (MHC) welcomes transfer applications from students at 2-year and 4-year institutions, including current WKU students. Joining MHC as a transfer scholar offers academic and personal growth through challenging coursework, smaller class sizes, a diverse community, leadership and professional development, study abroad programs, and alumni networking.

Prospective scholars must apply to WKU first, then to MHC. Current WKU students only need to apply to MHC. Application for admission by a transfer applicant is accessed via Formstack form.

Eligibility:

Current WKU, Community College, or Transfer Student (18-45 total credit hours earned)

  • No more than 45 total hours of college coursework completed and in-progress with a 3.2 cumulative GPA.  Eligible for the full 28-hour Mahurin Honors College curriculum.

Current WKU, Community College, or Transfer Student (45-75 total credit hours earned)

  • Between 45-75 total hours of college coursework completed and in-progress with a 3.2 cumulative GPA. Eligible for the Honors in the Major curriculum.

Selection Timeline:

  • December 15 - preferred application deadline for high school seniors starting WKU in Fall 2025; or for transfers seeking admission to MHC for Spring 2025
  • July 15 - final deadline for high school seniors starting in Fall 2025 or transfer students starting in Fall/Winter 2025

First-Time Freshmen Scholarships: To be considered for these scholarships, first-time freshmen students must plan to enroll full-time at WKU in the Summer or Fall semester of 2025, which requires a complete application with the Admissions Office.

Academic scholarships at Western Kentucky University are awarded through the Office of Student Financial Assistance. A wide variety of scholarships are available for first-time freshmen, current students and transfer students.

Should you have questions about Scholarships, the Office of Student Financial Assistance will be your main contact in receiving help (we in the MHC Office of course will help, but the Office of Student Financial Assistance will be the main/first point).

In addition to the scholarships that are awarded by the University based on academic merit, there are numerous scholarships that are awarded by the College Heights Foundation through private funds established by alumni and friends, academic departments or programs throughout the University, or by community organizations and professional associations.

To be eligible for any of these awards, each scholar must submit their TOPDollar Scholarship Application annually by January 1.

Application

Current Mahurin Honors College scholars in good standing are eligible to apply for a variety of grants to support out-of-classroom experiences, including but not limited to: study abroad, research, travel to academic conferences and internships.
