Lockdown Browser & Respondus Monitor

LockDown Browser by Respondus is a secure browser used with Blackboard assessments. It restricts access to other websites, applications, printing, copying, and other computer functions while an assessment is in progress.

Respondus Monitor can be used with LockDown Browser to provide automated webcam-based proctoring for online assessments.

Instructor Best Practices

• Add a statement to the syllabus regarding the use of LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor and discuss it with your students. Recommended language can be found on the WKU syllabus info website.
• Only use LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor on closed book, closed note tests. This is because the Monitor tool will flag looking at books/notes as suspicious behavior that requires instructor review.
• Create and give a low-stakes practice test to allow students the opportunity to work through any technical issues before the first graded assessment using these tools.
• It is not recommended that LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor are used for assessments done during in-person class meetings, as a high number of students taxing the Wi-Fi access points simultaneously could potentially cause issues.
• If offering an alternative option to the use of LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor in online courses, consider the use of proctoring services with the WKU Distance Learning Testing Center. However, this should be discussed and set up with the testing center in advance so they can schedule and administer the assessment at the campus testing center or help make off-site arrangements at other proctoring sites. Note that some off-campus proctoring sites may charge a fee for students to complete an assessment at their location.
