For the third year in a row, WKU is a top performing institution in Boren Awards. An initiative of the National Security Education Program, Boren Scholarships offer up to $25,000 for long-term and language-focused undergraduate study abroad.

The Freeman Award for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) recognized two WKU students as winners. Additionally, the Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant was awarded to two students.

All seven of WKU's applicants for Department of Defense-funded Boren Scholarships earned $25,000 awards to fund an academic year of study in the Chinese Flagship Capstone Year in Taiwan beginning in Fall 2026.

10 WKU students earned the U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad in the March 2026 application cycle.

Madison Gardner, a senior in computer science, has been awarded a ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship to conduct AI and robotics research at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in Switzerland.

WKU has been recognized as an all-time Top Producing Institution in the Gilman Scholarship Program. In the 25-year history of the program, WKU is a national leader among Medium Colleges and Universities.

May 27th, 2025

24 WKU students earned the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad in the March 2025 application cycle, more than all other public universities in Kentucky combined. Combined, their scholarships totaled $83,000.

The Freeman Award for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) recognized four WKU students as winners and two additional students as alternates. Additionally, the Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant was awarded to one student.

Two WKU students were awarded Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) scholarships for study abroad in the February 2025 application cycle. The recipients were offered scholarships for study abroad in Austria for the Summer 2024 term.

18 WKU students earned the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for study abroad in the March 2024 application cycle, more than any other college or university in Kentucky.
