Freshmen Scholarships


First -Time Freshmen Scholarships

Information Applicable to Beginning Freshmen Fall 2018

First-time freshmen refers to either graduating high school seniors or students who have not earned any college credit after high school graduation (with the exception of summer credit at the institution of Fall entry).

Eligibility & Application

Students with a minimum 3.8 unweighted GPA and a minimum 31 ACT (1420 SAT) qualify to compete for WKU’s most prestigious scholarship, the Cherry Presidential. 

To be considered for the Cherry Presidential Scholarship, students must have a complete application package on file by December 1.  A complete application package includes the following:

A select number of students will be invited to campus to interview for the Cherry Presidential Scholarship.  The interviews will be held in early February.

Award & Notification

Those selected to receive the Cherry Presidential Scholarship will receive an annual award up to $16,000 ($64,000 over a four year period).  Cherry Presidential Finalists will receive an annual award up to $12,000 ($48,000 over a four year period).

Cherry Presidential Scholarship recipients and Cherry Presidential Finalists will be notified of their award by early March. 

Students receiving the Cherry Presidential Scholarship or the Cherry Presidential Finalist award may also be eligible for Targeted Awards and TOPDollar awards, up to Cost of Attendance.  In the event a student’s total award package exceeds Cost of Attendance, the Cherry Presidential Scholarship or the Cherry Presidential Finalist award may be reduced. 

The Cherry Presidential Scholarship and Cherry Presidential Finalist award requires full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours).

Disbursement

Scholarship awards are applied toward charges that exist on the student’s account at WKU.  In the event total awards (grants, loans, scholarships) exceed total charges (tuition, fees, housing, meals, books), a refund will be issued to the student by the option chosen when selecting the refund preference at RefundSelection.com

Renewal

The Cherry Presidential Scholarship and the Cherry Presidential Finalist awards are automatically renewable with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 (at the end of the spring semester).  Students who fail to meet the renewal GPA of 3.4 can use the summer term to bring their GPA up to the required level to maintain the award at the original value. Students who fail to meet the renewal GPA of 3.4 but have at least a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 will receive an $8,000 annual award.     

 The Cherry Presidential Scholarship and the Cherry Presidential Finalists awards are renewable for up to 4 academic years or until graduation, whichever occurs first.

Eligibility & Application

Students with a minimum 3.3 unweighted GPA and a minimum 25 ACT (1200 SAT) qualify for WKU’s Academic Merit Awards.    

To be considered for an Academic Merit Award, students must have a complete application package on file.  A complete application package includes the following:

Award & Notification

Academic Merit Awards range from $1,500 to $8,000 per academic year ($6,000-$32,000 over a four year period) as demonstrated in the chart below.

Students who qualify for an Academic Merit Award and are admitted by February 1 will be notified of their eligibility for this award shortly after being admitted.

Students receiving an Academic Merit Award may also be eligible for Targeted Awards and TOPDollar awards, up to Cost of Attendance.

Academic Merit Awards require full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours).

Students who meet the minimum criteria for this award (GPA/ACT) but do not apply for admission by the February 1 deadline will still be considered, contingent upon availability of scholarship funds.  Notification of eligibility for late applicants will occur mid-May and mid-July.

Eligibilty & Application

Students who participated in KY Governor’s Scholars, KY Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs, and KY Governor’s School for the Arts are eligible for an academic scholarship at WKU.

National Merit and Achievement Semi-Finalists and Rogers Scholars are eligible for an academic scholarship at WKU.

These Targeted Awards require a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA.  

To be considered for this Targeted Award, students must have a complete application package on file.  A complete application package includes the following:

The value of this Targeted Award is $1,500 per academic year ($6,000 over a four year period).

Students who qualify for a Targeted Award and are admitted by February 1 will be notified of their eligibility for this award shortly after being admitted.

Students who qualify for a Targeted Award and are admitted by February 1 will be notified of their eligibility for this award shortly after being admitted.

Incoming freshmen with superior academic achievements may receive an additional Tuition Incentive Program Scholarship (TIPS) in the amount of $2,500 per year for up to four years. In order to qualify for this scholarship, students must be a resident of a TIP county, have a 3.0 unweighted high school GPA, an ACT composite score of 25 or greater, and be accepted to WKU by February 1st.

As previously indicated above, to be considered for the Tuition Incentive Program Scholarship, students must have a complete application package on file with the Admissions Office. A complete application package for TIPS includes the following:

  • Applied AND admitted to WKU by February 1
  • Official high school transcript received by February 1
  • ACT or SAT scores received by February 1

A 3.00 collegiate GPA is required for renewal.
