First-Time Freshmen Scholarships


Information Applicable to Beginning Freshmen Fall 2020

First-time freshmen refers to either graduating high school seniors or students who have not earned any college credit after high school graduation (with the exception of summer credit at the institution of Fall entry).

To be considered for guaranteed scholarships, students must plan to enroll full-time at WKU in the Summer or Fall semester of 2020, which will require a complete application with the Admissions Office.

Cherry Presidential Scholarship


Eligibility & Application

Students with a minimum 3.8 unweighted GPA and a minimum 31 ACT (1420 SAT) qualify to compete for WKU’s most prestigious scholarship, the Cherry Presidential. 

To be considered for the Cherry Presidential Scholarship, students must have a complete application package on file by December 1.  A complete application package includes the following:

  • Applied AND admitted to WKU by December 1
  • Applied to Honors College by December 1 (students must be admitted to WKU prior to applying to Honors College)
  • Official high school transcript received by December 1
  • ACT or SAT scores received by December 1

A select number of students will be invited to campus to interview for the Cherry Presidential Scholarship. The interviews will be held in early February.

Award & Notification

Those selected to receive the Cherry Presidential Scholarship will receive an annual award up to $16,000 ($64,000 over a four year period). Cherry Presidential Finalists will receive an annual award up to $12,000 ($48,000 over a four year period).

Cherry Presidential Scholarship recipients and Cherry Presidential Finalists will be notified of their award by early March. 

Students receiving the Cherry Presidential Scholarship or the Cherry Presidential Finalist award may also be eligible for Targeted Awards and TOPDollar awards, up to Cost of Attendance.  In the event a student’s total award package exceeds Cost of Attendance, the Cherry Presidential Scholarship or the Cherry Presidential Finalist award may be reduced. 

The Cherry Presidential Scholarship and Cherry Presidential Finalist award requires full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours each semester).

Disbursement

Scholarship awards are applied toward charges that exist on the student’s WKU account. Scholarships often disburse before the semester begins and always show as a credit on the bill, not to exceed the cost of attendance budget. In the event that total awards (grants, loans, scholarships) exceed total charges (tuition, fees, housing, meals, books), a refund will be issued to the student up to cost of attendance according to the refund preference he/she selected at my.wku.edu. Renewal

The Cherry Presidential Scholarship and the Cherry Presidential Finalist awards are automatically renewable with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (at the end of the spring semester). Students who fail to meet the renewal GPA of 3.0 can use the summer term to bring their GPA up to the required level to maintain the award at the original value.

The Cherry Presidential Scholarship and the Cherry Presidential Finalists awards are renewable for up to 4 academic years or until graduation, whichever occurs first.

Academic Merit Awards


Eligibility & Application

Students with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA qualify for WKU’s Academic Merit Awards.    

To be considered for an Academic Merit Award, students must have a complete application package on file.  A complete application package includes the following:

Award & Notification

Academic Merit Awards range from $2,500 to $8,000 per academic year ($10,000-$32,000 over a four year period) as demonstrated in the chart below.

Students who qualify for an Academic Merit Award will be notified of their eligibility for this award shortly after being admitted to WKU.

Students receiving an Academic Merit Award may also be eligible for Targeted Awards and TOPDollar awards, up to Cost of Attendance.

Kentucky Governor's School for Entrepreneurs,
Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts,
National Merit & Achievement Semi-Finalists,
or Rogers Scholars


Eligibility & Application

Students who participated in KY Governor’s Scholars, KY Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs, and KY Governor’s School for the Arts are eligible for an academic scholarship at WKU.

National Merit and Achievement Semi-Finalists and Rogers Scholars are eligible for an academic scholarship at WKU.

These Targeted Awards require a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA.  

To be considered for this Targeted Award, students must have a complete application package on file.  A complete application package includes the following:

The value of this Targeted Award is $1,500 per academic year ($6,000 over a four year period).

Students who qualify for a Targeted Award will be notified of their eligibility for this award shortly after being admitted to WKU.

Students receiving a Targeted Award may also be eligible for Cherry PresidentialAcademic Merit and TOPDollar awards, up to Cost of Attendance.

Targeted Awards require full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours each semester).

Targeted Cornelius A. Martin Scholarship


Eligibility & Application

Underrepresented minority students with a minimum 2.5 unweighted GPA qualify for a Targeted Award.

Students who have a 2.5 up to 2.9 unweighted GPA qualify for $2,000 per academic year. 

Students who have a 3.0 or greater unweighted GPA qualify for $3,000 per academic year.

Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) Scholarships


Incoming freshmen with superior academic achievements may receive an additional Tuition Incentive Program (TIP) Scholarship in the amount of $2,500 per year for up to four years. In order to qualify for this scholarship, students must be a resident of a TIP county, have a 3.0 unweighted high school GPA, and be accepted to WKU.

As previously indicated above, to be considered for the Tuition Incentive Program Scholarship, students must have a complete application package on file with the Admissions Office. A complete application package for TIPS includes the following:

A 2.5 collegiate GPA is required for renewal.

Targeted Non-Resident Scholarship


Eligibility & Application

Non-Resident students (excluding those residing in an eligibleTuition Incentive Program county) with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA qualify for a Targeted Award.

The value of this Targeted Award is $10,000 per academic year ($40,000 over a four year period).

Students receiving a Targeted Award may also be eligible for Cherry Presidential, Academic Merit and TOPDollar awards, up to Cost of Attendance.

Targeted Awards require full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours each semester).

Graduates of Gatton Academy or Craft Academy with a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA qualify for a Targeted Award.
