BOWLING GREEN, KY. – Hosted by Western Kentucky University’s Nonprofit Student Association, two local nonprofit organizations and one local business were recognized for their hard work and influence within the Bowling Green community.
On Thursday, April 18, 2019, at Lost River Cave, more than 30 business professionals within the community gathered for an award luncheon to recognize local nonprofit organizations and businesses in three categories. The categories were:
- 2019 Emerging Nonprofit Organization Award (active in the local area for less than 5 years)
- 2019 Established Nonprofit Organization Award (active in the local area 5 years or more)
- 2019 Philanthropic Business Award (provides exceptional support to local nonprofit organizations)
The winner of the first award, the 2019 Emerging Nonprofit Organization Award, was given to the Room In The Inn (RITI). This nonprofit organization provides a wintering sheltering program for our community’s homeless individuals. This year from November until March 100’s of volunteers and community members worked together to provide shelter and resources for 30 guests on a nightly basis. Individuals are given a warm place to sleep during these frigid nights, they are also given a pair of warm socks or shoes and healthcare resources provided by nurses.
The winner of the second award, the 2019 Established Nonprofit Organization Award, was given to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). This nonprofit organization just celebrated their twentieth year preventing and eliminating further trauma to children in the Bowling Green community. They specifically work to prevent children from further trauma of abuse, neglect and dependency. For each volunteer within this organization, they support 45-75 children. CASA currently has a goal that by 2020, 100% of children in need will have advocates.
The last award of the day, the 2019 Philanthropic Business Award, went to English, Lucas, Priest and Owsley, LLC. This business is a title sponsor for, Blockbusters in the Ballpark. This is a free community event for children and families located at the Bowling Green Ballpark. ELPO and its staff members not only give back to the community but they also support many organizations to help them grow. These are just a few of the many organizations that ELPO supports in various ways throughout the community: United Way of Southern Kentucky, The Center for Courageous Kids, The Legal Diversity Pipeline Project and the Salvation Army’s food pantry.
On behalf of the School of Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport and the WKU Nonprofit Student Association, we wish to say thank you to all the groups that attended the luncheon.
