KRS Students Attend National Recreation and Parks Assoc. Annual Conference

A group of four students and one faculty member from WKU’s School of Kinesiology, Recreation & Sport (KRS) in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) attended the 2015 National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) Conference in Las Vegas, NV.  Celebrating its 50th anniversary, NRPA is the leading non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of public parks, recreation and conservation.

The group were afforded the opportunity to network with professionals in the field, meet with relevant vendors, and reconnect with prior KRS graduates.  Conference speakers included U.S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, Gil Penalosa, Founder and Chair of the Board for 8-80 cities, and many professionals and educators in the field of parks and recreation.

“The entire experience was contagiously inspiring,” stated Jenna Woosley, graduate assistance for the Recreation Administration program.  Woosley noted that those in the parks and recreation profession are here to promote “conservation, health and wellness, as well as social equity; it’s just what we do.”

At the conference, NRPA announced that, based on an economic impact study of local park systems, local and regional parks create nearly $140 billion in economic activity each year, and support almost 1 million jobs in the United States.

“These numbers should be a wake-up call to the elected officials in Congress that they must act now to protect the nation’s local parks and recreation,” says Barbara Tulipane president and CEO of NRPA. Due to the study findings, NRPA wants Congress to reauthorize the law with full and permanent funding, and allocate 40 percent guaranteed funding to the State Assistance Program.

Students who attended the conference were, David Judd of Louisville, KY; Natalie Shaner of Shepardsville, KY; Greg Hudson and Jenna Woosley, both of Brownsville, KY.
