Health Career Explorers


Health Career Explorers is a free after-school program for high school students eager to explore healthcare careers.

Each month, participants get behind-the-scenes access to Russell County Hospital, exploring multiple departments, participating in hands-on activities, and engaging with healthcare professionals.

Applications must be submitted by February 6, 2026.

Health Career Explorers occurs on the following Tuesdays, 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm:

  • February 17, 2026
  • March 10, 2026
  • April 21, 2026
  • May 12, 2026

Throughout Health Career Explorers, students will explore multiple departments at Russell County Hospital as they learn about a variety of medical career paths. The program meets one Tuesday per month from February through May. 

Meetings are held at the hospital. More information, a detailed schedule, and directions will be provided to accepted students.

Students are responsible for transportation to/from program.

Please read the following carefully:

  • Admission is selective and is limited to 10 students
  • Open to high school students from any school in or around Russell County including neighboring districts, as well as private and home school students) are eligible to apply
  • Students must commit to attend all program sessions
  • Admitted students must complete the following required acceptance paperwork (forms will be emailed upon acceptance):
    • Student Information Form
    • Confidentiality Agreement
    • Russell County Hospital Media/Photo Release
    • WKU Media/Photo Release

What do I wear to the program?
Please dress professionally. Khakis, a pair of dark colored jeans with no rips, black pants, etc. A nice top, preferably no t-shirts or hoodies. No lounge or workout gear. You must wear closed-toed and closed-heeled shoes to every meeting.

 

Where do we meet?
Meetings will be at Russell County Hospital. Accepted students will receive additional information about meeting locations.

 

What time should I arrive?

Students should arrive beginning at 4:15 pm so the program activities can promptly begin at 4:30 pm.

 

School is closed due to severe weather. Are we still meeting?
Often times the roads are greatly improved by the time our program is to begin. Cameron will assess the conditions in the late morning and make a final decision. The final decision will be emailed or texted out. You are also welcome to contact Cameron directly. If you do not feel comfortable traveling in the given road conditions, please do not come.

 

I really liked department _____ and would like to shadow there, what should I do?
Ask while we are at the department! Many of the departments will let students shadow them during school breaks or on days when school is not in session.

 

Is transportation provided?

No. Students and parents are responsible for transportation to and from the hospital for each meeting.
