Plant Operations

 Bring on the HEAT!

Every November, WKU works to transition campus buildings from air conditioning to heat (steam). Steam is distributed to campus buildings through a series of complex pipes. Many of these buildings only have one pipeline, so it is necessary to fully disconnect cooling capabilities in order to provide buildings with heat. Once transitioned, campus buildings will only have heating capabilities until spring.

 Plant Operations by the Numbers

Plant Operation's maintains and monitors all utilities across campus. These operations are essential to maintaining campus comfort and keeping campus in working order. Plant Operation's controls the building system through Metasys from Johnson Controls.
  • This system has over 150,000 points that control and/or monitor our campus.
  • Facilities Management uses this system to schedule utilities for buildings (including classrooms).
  • This system controls chillers, HVAC equipment, and lighting.
