Did you know that every academic college at WKU has students who have declared a Pre-Health concentration? Pre-Health concentrations are personal and professional development paths students pursue alongside their chosen major's degree requirements. It is important for all advisors to be aware of what it means to pursue Pre-Health in order to best guide students toward achieving their goals.
This session will outline the basics of pursuing a Pre-Health concentration (specifically Pre-Medicine, Pre-Dentistry, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-PT, Pre-OT, Pre-Physician Assistant, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Chiropractic, and Pre-Podiatry) and how to encourage students to be competitive applicants for their chosen professional schools.

Note: This session is best suited for those comfortable using generative AI tools like ChatGPT or Claude for brainstorming and troubleshooting.
During this hands-on session, you'll learn to leverage AI as a creative partner for developing custom content layouts and interactive learning activities that embed directly in Blackboard “Documents”. You’ll learn how to transform static course materials into intuitive learning experiences that help students easily navigate content and stay engaged with the material. Practical examples ranging from functional checklists, styled callout boxes, and visual timelines to flashcards, sorting activities, and decision trees will be explored. You'll leave with ready-to-use templates, prompt ideas, and the confidence to transform your course documents into dynamic, accessible learning spaces tailored to your teaching style and your students’ needs.
- Location: GRH 1073

College students are increasingly adept at “doing school” - completing tasks, following directions, and earning grades - yet many struggle to engage in the kind of cognitive work that leads to genuine learning. In an era complicated by AI tools that further blur the line between understanding and performance, instructors must intentionally design experiences that promote deep engagement. This session introduces the Hourglass Paradigm of Learning, a WKU-developed framework that illuminates the stages of effective learning and aligns with current research on how the brain encodes, consolidates, and retrieves information. You will learn why students often default to passive habits, how these habits undermine long-term understanding, and what practical strategies faculty can implement to help students move from task completion to true cognitive engagement.

Curious about integrating flipped classroom or high-structure course design into your teaching? Join CITL for our first course design lab, an open workspace to spark ideas and engage in shared problem-solving. We'll think out loud and brainstorm practical ways to incorporate these approaches into your teaching.
This isn't a lecture with a "right answer," but a space to learn with and from one another by asking questions, testing ideas, and exploring how these methods can support student learning while honoring your individual teaching style. CITL will guide the conversation and support you as ideas take shape.
Come ready to reflect, share, and build ideas together.
