Possible Penalties for Nonpayment

As the result of nonpayment, one or more of the following penalties are possible:

  • you will not be able to order transcripts

  • you cannot re-enroll at the university

  • you cannot receive your diploma

  • you will not be able to register for classes

  • your account may go to an outside collections agency

  • you will be responsible for additional collection fees and interest which may be assessed and will be due in full at the time of the referral to the third party. The collection fee will be calculated at the maximum amount permitted by applicable law, but not to exceed 33 1/3% of the amount outstanding. If a lawsuit is filed to recover an outstanding balance, the debtor shall also be responsible for any costs associated with the lawsuit such as court costs or other applicable costs

  • your delinquent account, by semester and type, may be reported to one or more of the national credit bureaus

  • your account could be referred to the Kentucky Department of Revenue for collections, which could result in wage garnishments, bank levies, liens, tax refund seizures, or other collection actions. Additional collection penalties will be added to the total amount due to defray the cost of collections

Placement with an Outside agency

Once an account has been referred to a collection agency, attorney, or the Kentucky Department of Revenue, the additional collections fee cannot be removed from the account and the student must make all payment arrangements with the collection agency.

Accounts with the Kentucky Department of Revenue

Once an account has been referred to the Kentucky Department of Revenue (DOR), all payment arrangements must be made directly with their office. You would need to contact the Kentucky Department of Revenue at 502-564-4921 ext. 5368. You can contact their office directly to make any payments, set up payment arrangement or get your exact payoff.

WKU cannot lift any holds on your account until it is paid in full with guaranteed funds, even if you are on a payment plan with DORTo have your hold lifted immediately, you could pay DOR with a credit card and ask them to notify us.

If you make your final payment with a checking account, check by phone, or debit account, there will be a delay in removing your hold until you verify funds have cleared your account. WKU would require an email from DOR stating your account is showing as paid in full with a checking account AND require documentation from you from your financial institution verifying the funds have cleared your account (no longer in pending status) and you have a credit balance remaining in that account. Proof of a cleared payment can be emailed to collections@wku.edu.
