Dr. Andrew McMichael

My Cuba experience began in 1999 when I traveled there to conduct research for my dissertation. I traveled there again 2002 and in 2003 for research on a book. I returned in 2004 and 2005 as part of an NEH grant digitizing slave records in Havana and Mantanzas. We preserved around 750,000 records in the period ranging from the early 1500s through the early 1800s. Those records are now available for free, online, at http://diglib.library.vanderbilt.edu/esss.pl

I returned to Cuba in 2007 and 2009 as part of a project with Jeanie Adams-Smith. We conducted interviews and she shot a great deal of footage. I returned to Cuba this past May as part of the upcoming “International Year of . . .” for 2018. I have conducted interviews on the radio and television about Cuba-related issues, and I currently serve on the Engage Cuba Coalition state council.
