School of Journalism & Broadcasting Fellowships and Scholarships

Several departmental scholarships are available for students pursuing a major in the School of Journalism & Broadcasting who show academic achievement and financial need.  These scholarships are listed below. Application deadlines are usually in February, March or April prior to the upcoming school year.

Loans, university scholarships and part-time jobs are described in the Western Kentucky University Bulletin. Students may apply for these general scholarships as well.

 Broadcasting Internship Fellowship and Summer Internship Scholarship  

Charles M. Anderson Public Broadcasting Fellowship in radio news & television production

Fellows will gain an in-depth exposure to the professional environment of Western's Public Broadcasting, working side-by-side with some of the best broadcast professionals in the nation.

Fellows will be enrolled in BCOM 491 Internship -- a 3 credit hour course -- in either the fall 2015 semester or the spring 2016 semester. The Fellowship will pay the tuition for the course (in-state rate) and pay an hourly wage for the 240 hours of work necessary to meet the course requirements, plus a cash stipend.  For application and deadlines contact: David Brinkley at WKYU-TV24 (270) 745-2400.

Eligibility requirements: Minimum overall 3.2 G.P.A. and 18 hours completed in their major in the School of Journalism & Broadcasting. Submit a current resume, an application narrative, portfolio of relevant work, and 3 letters of recommendation. A FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) must be completed for the 2015-16 academic year and on file at WKU.

A practical exam of demonstrated professional skills may be requested.

Fellowship Application 

Summer Internship Tuition Scholarship

Multiple awards to offset tuition related to a summer internship. Student must be an admitted  SJ&B major with at least a 2.5 GPA and junior or senior status.  Student must have secured an employer commitment upon submission of the scholarship application and must enroll in a SJ&B summer internship course: AD 448, BCOM 369 or 491, or PR 458.

Donald W. Reynolds Foundation Scholarship

Freshmen planning to major in journalism, photojournalism or advertising.

Awarded based upon scholarship, leadership, involvement, demonstration of aptitude and attitude. Scholarship Amount: $500.

Scholarships for Minority Students in a Variety of SJ&B Majors

Joseph A. Dear Memorial Scholarships

Ten awards for minority students in advertising, broadcasting, journalism and photojournalism majors based on scholarship, leadership and involvement in publications,aptitude and attitude. Scholarship amount: $1,000 per student. This scholarship is renewable by scholarship recipients.

 

Scholarships for Advertising Majors


John B. and Clarence M. Gaines Scholarship

One award for upper-class advertising major. Awarded based on scholarship, advertising activities and professional growth. Scholarship amount: $5,500.

The award is for the purpose of recognizing and assisting deserving Western Kentucky University students majoring in Advertising within the School of Journalism & Broadcasting. Financial need should be considered as well as motivation and potential for professional growth. Application forms will be available in the spring semester at the SJ&B main office in MMTH 216. Decisions will be made in the summer.

Carl C. "Pat" Jordan Scholarship

One award for an advertising major. Awarded based on creativity in any area of advertising, scholarship, advertising activities and potential for professional growth; Scholarship amount: $125.

Application forms will be available in the spring semester at the SJ&B main office in MMTH 216. Contact Professor Cliff Shaluta for more information.  Decisions are made in the summer.

The University will notify recipients before the fall semester.

Kerrie Stewart Memorial Scholarship

One award for an advertising major. Awarded based on scholarship, advertising activities professional growth, citizenship and other commendable characteristics that marked the lifeof Kerrie Stewart; Scholarship amount: $200.

Application forms will be available in the spring semester at the SJ&B main office MMTH 216. Decisions will be made in the summer. The University will notify recipients before the fall semester.

Scholarships for Broadcasting Majors

Charles M. Anderson Scholarship in Communication and Technology

One award for a full-time sophomore, junior or senior broadcasting major with an emphasis in television/film production or broadcast journalism. Awarded based on the personal qualities of character, integrity,dependability, industriousness, and human compassion which produce leaders and merit the honor of the award.

Financial need is to be a consideration.  Scholarship amount: $1,000. The broadcast faculty committee reviews applications. The review committee may also request an interview. Notification of the award will be in the form of a letter from the University Scholarship Committee. Applications may be obtained online or in the SJ&B office, MMTH-216. Applications are due February 23, 2016.  Access scholarship application.

 
The Julian and Betty Goodman Scholarship in Broadcast Journalism

Award for full-time broadcast communication or mass communication majors pursuing a career in broadcast news and public affairs with at least a 3.0 GPA and junior status at the time applications are due.

Award based on evidence of academic success, potential in leadership, possession of the personal qualities of character, integrity, concern for others, and citizenship. Scholarship amount: $1,800

Procedures for Application:

Applications may be obtained online or in the SJ&B office, MMTH-216. Applications are due February 23, 2016.

All applications must be typed, double spaced, and must include an essay on why the student is deserving of the scholarship.

Procedures for Selection and Administration of Award:

The broadcast faculty reviews applications. The faculty may also request an interview.

The committee reserves the right to divide the award between qualified applicants.

Notification of the award will be in the form of a letter from the University Scholarship Committee.

 
Bob Proctor Scholarship in Broadcasting

Award for a full-time senior broadcasting major. Awarded based on personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness and human compassion, which produce leaders and merit the honor of the award. Scholarship amount: $1,200 (the selection committee reserves the right to divide the award between qualified applicants).

Applicants must complete a scholarship application prior to the academic year for which the individual is applying. Applications are due February 23, 2016. The Broadcast faculty will make the selection.

The recommendation will be forwarded to the University Scholarship Committee. Notification of the award will be in the form of a letter from the University Scholarship Committee. Applications may be obtained online or in the SJ&B office, MMTH-216. Access scholoarship application.

Scholarships for Film Majors or Minors
 

O'Neill – Locken Scholarship in Film Studies 

Recipients must be full-time students at Western Kentucky University

Recipients must be pursuing a major in Film or a minor in Film Studies

Recipients must be graduating in May of 2017 or later

Recipients must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Financial need is to be an important consideration.

Applications are due March 2, 2016

Scholarships for Journalism Majors and members of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)  

Bryan Leigh Armstrong Memorial Journalism Scholarship

One award to a junior or senior majoring in journalism with a sincere interest in journalism career as a writer or editor. Awarded based on scholarship, leadership while serving on the College Heights Herald, character and demonstration of aptitude and attitude. Scholarship amount: $250.

Thomas R. Curran Journalism Scholarship

Three awards to junior or senior journalism majors. Awarded to students exhibiting outstanding promise as reporters. Scholarship amount: $3,000 per student.

Virginia Wood Davis Scholarship

Awarded to one sophomore, one junior, and one senior print journalism majors with a 3.5 overall GPA. Students must demonstrate need and show outstanding potential for a career in journalism. The scholarship amount, determined by the WKU Foundation, is $3,000.

W.T. and Ella Morris Davis Scholarship

Two awards to journalism majors interested in community news journalism. Preference is given to students from Lyon, Hopkins or Caldwell counties in Kentucky. Scholarship amount: $1,800.

Carroll F. Knicely Journalism Scholarship

One award for senior journalism major awarded to a student exhibiting outstanding promise. Scholarship amount: $1,000.

Frank Sutherland SPJ Journalism Scholarship

One award for an SPJ member who is a sophomore, junior or senior majoring in either advertising, broadcasting, journalism or photojournalism. Awarded based on demonstrated professional aptitude, participation in journalism activities, scholarship, character and need. Scholarship amount: $800.

Scholarships for Photojournalism Majors

Kodak Professional Photography Scholarship

One award for a photojournalism major. Awarded based on professional ability, scholarship and leadership.

Scholarship amount: $1,000 depending on endowment earnings. For more information, contact Professor James Kenney.

Lynn Saunders Scholarship

Based on endowment earnings, one award for photojournalism majors. Awarded based on professional ability, scholarship, and leadership. Scholarship amount: $500. Application materials required: portfolio, resume and 500-word essay on what photojournalism means to you. For more information, contact Professor James Kenney.

Scholarships for Public Relations Majors

Robert G. Cochran Scholarship

One award for public relations majors/PRSSA members. Awarded based on character, leadership, scholarship and professional development; Scholarship amount: $1,600.  Nominated and selected by faculty. No application needed.

Sara Thompson Scholarship

One award for upper-class public relations major/PRSSA member. Awarded based on character,leadership, scholarship and professional development; Scholarship amount: $1,000.  Nominated and selected by faculty. No application needed.
