The Gilman Scholarship program aims to make study abroad more accessible and inclusive for students with limited financial means. Students receiving Pell Grants can earn up to $8,000 for study abroad program expenses, including airfare, tuition, room and board, and other program costs. Learn more.

Attendees will learn how to apply for a Gilman Scholarship, application components, and qualities of a competitive application.  Can't attend a workshop? Set up a one-on-one meeting with Lindsey in the Office of Scholar Development.

The Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program is a program funded by the U.S. Department of State, administered by Howard University, that attracts and prepares outstanding young people for Foreign Service careers in the U.S. Department of State.   It welcomes the application of members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the State Department, women, and those with financial need.  Based on the fundamental principle that diversity is a strength in our diplomatic efforts, the program values varied backgrounds, including ethnic, racial, social, and geographic diversity. “Funding in :15” provides an opportunity for students to learn about national scholarships and other opportunities in 15-minute increments.  Sessions will begin at 9 a.m. and cover four topics every hour until 4pm:

  • Funding graduate school in the sciences (on the hour)
  • Paid summer research in STEM and social sciences (at 15 minutes past)
  • Study abroad scholarships (at half past)
  • Critical language study abroad (at 45 minutes past).

In addition to learning about different opportunities, attendees will get a brief overview of application processes and tips for success. OSD staff will be available before and after their presentations to chat with students, answer questions and make appointments for one-on-one advising.

The NSF-GRFP awards up to $138,000 for graduate school in STEM, Social Science, and STEM Education fields. Join Dr. Ashley Stinnett to learn strategies for developing a strong proposal and personal statement.
