Research Awards and Recognitions

During my tenure at GFCB, I received the following awards, recognitions, and grants.

Research Awards:

  • 2023: Awarded the GFCB College Faculty Award for Research and Creativity, presented by the former GFCB Dean, Chris Shook.
  • 2018: Received the GFCB College Faculty Award for Research and Creativity, conferred by the former Provost, David Lee.
  • 2015: Designated as the "Most Prolific Grant Proposer" by the former Vice Provost, Gordon Baylis.

Grants & Funding:

  • Out of the 35 grants I submitted, I successfully secured 23, accumulating a total of approximately $300,000.

Student Funding:

  • During my tenure, I successfully secured funding for seven graduate assistantships and procured seventeen FUSE grants, cumulatively providing student support amounting to $102,500.

2022-23: GFCB Secures Over $101 Thousand in Research Grants via the Center:

  • Under the EXTERNAL GRANT category: The awarded grant titled "The Influence of AmeriCorps Members on Ecosystem Management" (Award# 545402) brought in an allocation totaling $52,805.108. The distribution of this amount was as follows:
    • AIS Department: An allocation of $14,495 was set aside for the AIS department, specifically for a course buyout.
    • GFCB: Upon the conclusion of this grant, the College stands to gain $5,987.108 as an F&A contribution.
    • Faculty: A sum of $27,323 has been allocated for faculty member to engage in a comprehensive 10-week summer research analysis.
    • Graduate Research Scholar: A dedicated fund of $5,000 allocated to support scholarly activities of a graduate research student.
  • Via the WKU OSP RCAP GRANT, a $14,547 grant was secured to support the hardware needs for the first phase of BINDR (Brain Imaging Network Data Repository). BINDR utilizes AI algorithms to enable radiologists to accurately identify brain diseases from recent scans, including X-ray, CT, and MRI. These funds are crucial for developing an initial prototype, setting the stage for collaboration between the WKU Center for Applied Data Analytics and the University of Louisville Knowledge Discovery & Web Mining Lab.
  • FUSE GRANT 2023: Collectively, FUSE GRANT 2023 amounted to $29,000 in student awards. In Spring 2023, awards were conferred to three students. This amounted to a total of $10,500. For Fall 2023, five students were awarded. These grants totaled $18,500.
  • With an allocation of $4,839 under the C-QTAG GRANT: The Center assumed a leadership role, orchestrating the formulation of a cross-departmental grant proposal. Valued faculty members including Jim Lindsey, John Erickson, Jacob Byl, and Stephen Locke directly benefited from this initiative.

Special Recognition from NSF:

In 2023, received a fully funded invitation to the NSF Aspiring Principal Investigator Summit at Georgia Tech. The summit encouraged collaboration for the Computer & Information Science and Engineering Mid-Late career researcher funding initiatives. Among a selective group of 30 Computer Science faculty members nationally. The summary of my NSF proposal has been posted on the official NSF website (link).

Research Statement

My research journey is characteristic of a relentless pursuit of excellence. I don’t just aim for quantity, but I prioritize the caliber of my contributions, as evidenced by my consistent targeting of leading journals in my area of expertise and proactive grant applications.

I've had the distinct honor of collaborating with esteemed scholars and professionals. This includes Professor Olfa Nasraoui from the University of Louisville; Professor Evelyn Thrasher, the GFCB Interim Dean; Professor Kirk Atkinson of Analytics and Information Systems; Professor Mark Ciampa, who serves as the Director of Analytics and Information Systems Graduate Programs; Professor Albert Meier, the Director at WKU Green River Preserve; Dr. Tuesdi Helbig, who directs the Office of Institutional Research at WKU; Professor Jerry Daday from Purdue University's Institute for Engaged Learning; Assistant Professor Allie McCreary from Auburn University, and Associate Professor Christina Noel of the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences.

These collaborations have profoundly influenced my academic journey. Such partnerships have been instrumental in elevating my scholarly reputation.

As of September 1, 2023, I have received 6,388 citations for my academic contributions on Google Scholar, and I have an i10-index value of 27. Here is the direct link to my Google Scholar Profile.

Summary of Research Activities

Throughout my academic journey, I've produced over 60 scholarly publications, including journal articles, book chapters, and peer-reviewed proceedings. Within the domain of Computer Engineering and Science, contributions to peer-reviewed articles in platforms such as ACM and IEEE Conferences are notable. To this end, I've contributed over 30 articles to these conferences, many with stringent acceptance rates of under 10%.

In line with GFCB's expectations, I refined my research focus toward journal publications upon joining the college. From 2013 onward, I have had the privilege of publishing 15 journal articles, of which seven were produced post my promotion to Associate Professor. Simultaneously, I have been successful in acquiring research funding from diverse sources, encompassing both external bodies and university-based initiatives. A key feature of my scholarly journey has been a commitment to collaboration, strengthening ties between WKU's administration, faculty, and student body.

Research Quality Indicators

Recently, the GFCB introduced the Research Award Program to honor faculty excelling in research. Among the awards is the Research Funds Award, recognizing contributions to esteemed faculty-specific journals. Securing an A or A* rank as per the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) criteria is notably exceptional. It should be noted that 13 of my published journal articles appeared in journals ranked within the top Q1. Furthermore, eight of these articles met the 2022 ABDC's evaluation criteria, attaining the respected A rank
