Graduate Application Process

We appreciate your interest in pursuing graduate studies (MS program) in Chemistry at Western Kentucky University. Please find information regarding application deadlines and requirements listed below. You may also find it helpful to explore the Department of Chemistry website for a description of the chemistry graduate program and information on faculty research interests. Application Requirements The application for MS in Chemistry admission to the Department of Chemistry has to be admitted through the Graduate School application online process. The application form and other details are available on the website http://www.wku.edu/graduate/

 If you are interested in a particular faculty research program, please list the faculty member on your application.

Application Criteria

•  An undergraduate degree in Chemistry or related field of science
• GRE general score (Verbal + Quant) . Otherprofessional exam scores (MCAT, PCAT etc.) may be used in lieu of the GRE
• TOEFL score (International applicants only)
• Three (3) letters of recommendation
• Official transcripts to document receipt of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

 GRE (Graduate Record Exam) The GRE General test scores required  include Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing. T The Chemistry Subject GRE is optional. The institution code is 1901. For information about taking the GRE, call 1-800-GRE-CALL or visit the ETS website at http://www.gre.org. Current test scores are preferred; however, we will accept official scores from tests taken within the last five years.

Transcripts Graduates of accredited institutions other than Western Kentucky University must request that one official transcript showing the completed degree to Western Kentucky University. The transcript must be forwarded from the college or university registrar electronically or directly to the Graduate School. Applicants who have not completed the undergraduate degree are required to submit one official transcript at the time of application and one official transcript showing the degree is completed. Transcript records must be submitted for any graduate and undergraduate courses taken at any institution other than WKU. Any paper transcripts must be received in the Graduate School in a sealed envelope from the issuing institution. Transcripts sent to the Graduate School become the property of the University and will not be returned to the student under any circumstances nor will a copy of the transcript be given to the student.

Letters of Recommendation Three (3) letters of recommendation are required. From relevant sources such as a work supervisor or a faculty advisor. Your listed references will be contacted via email to submit letters on-line.

 

International applicants Please note the following additional admissions requirements: All applicants from countries in which the official language is not English are required to submit official evidence of English language proficiency.

If you have completed at least one year of full-time academic course work with grades of B or better in residence at a recognized U.S. institution, you do not need to take a standardized test. Instead, you must upload an unofficial transcript from the recognized U.S. institution.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) TOEFL scores are required for all international students.
TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service. You can obtain detailed information from the TOEFL website www.toefl.org or contact TOEFL Services, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, (609) 771-7100.

Requesting Official Scores: Applicants who have already taken the TOEFL should request the Educational Testing Service send scores to the Western Kentucky University using our institution code number 1901.

 

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) As an exception, you can submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), which is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. You are responsible for providing us with an official Test Report Form (TRF) of your IELTS. Remember to order the TRF when you register to take the test. To register for the IELTS, consult the IELTS website www.ielts.org to locate the office of the test center where you plan to take the test.
