UB students in Chattanooga

Saturday Sessions

Saturday Sessions are held once per month during the academic year, beginning in September. Students are transported to WKU for tutoring, academic workshops, college tours, and cultural field trips.

All UB Students are brought together one Saturday per month during the academic year to participate in programming.  We'll provide an agenda approximately two weeks in advance. Upward Bound provides transportation from our target high schools to Western Kentucky University. Occasionally events are held other days of the week to take advantage of special opportunities not available on Saturday. Permission slips are required for all in-person Saturday Sessions. Permission slips are not required for virtual Saturday Sessions.

WKU Upward Bound Saturday Session Attendance Policy

Purpose: The WKU Upward Bound Saturday sessions are designed to provide students with valuable educational support and enrichment. Regular attendance is crucial for the success of both the individual student and the program as a whole.

Attendance Expectations:

  1. Regular Attendance: Students are expected to attend all scheduled Saturday sessions. Regular attendance ensures that students receive the maximum benefit from the program.

  2. Punctuality: Students should arrive on time for the Saturday sessions. Late arrivals disrupt the learning environment and may result in missed instructional content.

  3. Notification of Absences: In the event of an unavoidable absence, students or their parents/guardians are required to notify the Upward Bound office in advance. Notification can be provided via phone or email.

Consequences for Non-Attendance:

  1. First Absence: The first occurrence of non-attendance will result in a verbal warning. The student and their parent/guardian will be notified of the importance of regular attendance.

  2. Second Absence: A second absence will result in a written warning. The student and their parent/guardian will receive written communication emphasizing the impact of non-attendance on academic progress.

  3. Third Absence: A third absence may result in a meeting with the Upward Bound staff to discuss the reasons for non-attendance and to develop a plan for improvement.

  4. Fourth Absence: If a student accumulates a fourth absence, they may be subject to probation from the program. Continued non-attendance may lead to dismissal from the Upward Bound program.

Appeals Process: Students and their parents/guardians have the right to appeal any consequences related to non-attendance. Appeals should be submitted in writing to the Upward Bound Director within five business days of receiving the notification.

Note: Exceptions to the attendance policy may be considered on a case-by-case basis for extenuating circumstances. It is essential for students and their families to communicate with the Upward Bound staff to address any challenges related to attendance.
