Kevin London, Outstanding Student, MA in Sociology

Kevin London

I am a first generation college graduate from a blue collar salt of the earth background. One of the most impactful aspects of my time studying sociology and criminology were the class trips we took to prisons. Hearing the personal accounts from prisoners and how they got there impacted my life a great deal. Because of my training I was able to connect criminality to the larger - little noticed - social forces at play in the development of regular people into those who commit crime. The faculty at WKU not only helped in my understanding of why this happens, but also gave me the tools to independently investigate phenomena to bring out facts of a matter - not simply opinions which is so prevalent today. My interest in the area of criminality lead to me doing an internship at the Barren County Detention Center during my undergraduate studies.

After graduation I simply want to go where I am called to go with what I have learned in the Sociology Masters program. Where that will be I do not yet know. I have always been one of those people who see the many injustices in the world, which is one of the main reasons I chose to study sociology and criminology.  However, there is a good chance if one wants to find me at that time, they should be sure to look around where social injustices persist. For when and where they spring up, it is there I will go.
