Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration


Health Care Administration is a profession that provides management leadership in one of the nation's largest service industries. Components of the health care delivery system include hospitals, nursing homes, group medical practices, personal care homes, retirement centers, health maintenance organizations, medical sales, insurance, companies, etc. The bachelor's of science in healthcare administration has a business foundation in accounting, finance, management, economics, personnel management, as well as, a specialized foundation in health care administration and related health areas.

The environment of health care changes every day. Change, whether it be advances in technology, clinical practice, pharmaceuticals, diagnostic equipment, personnel requirements, information management, or many other areas of health care, is affecting the entire industry. The health care system in the United States is uniquely structured. This is where you, as a health care administration major, fit into the picture. The industry needs well-educated, energetic, competent, and creative managers and administrators that can not only prepare for the future of health care, but can also create that future.

Overview

The undergraduate degree program in health care administration prepares the student for administrative positions in various types of health care facilities and agencies, such as acute care, long term care, group medical practices, managed care organizations, health insurance agencies, public health agencies, clinics, and health related organizations such as manufacturing, marketing and consulting.

Program Requirements (73 hours)

A baccalaureate degree requires a minimum of 120 unduplicated semester hours. More information can be found at www.wku.edu/registrar/degree_certification.php.

Some of these required courses fulfill Colonnade subject area requirements. Requirements for admission (reference number 559): 30 hours including the above courses with overall GPA of 2.5 or better.  (ECON 202 or ECON 203 and one of the following options BIOL 131; PH 100 & PH 381; or PH 384).

All courses listed above require a minimum grade of “C” (both prerequisites and core courses).

Students will not be allowed to enroll in 400-level HCA classes until they are fully admitted into the HCA program.

Requirements for degree completion: 67 hours of program courses with an overall GPA of 2.5 or better.

NAB-Accredited Options

Students can obtain a National Association of Long-Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) Accredited degree by completing a B.S. in Health Care Administrtion, paired with the LTCA Certificate Program and an approved 1,000 hour internship.

Internship Information for Health Care Administration Majors

Internship Information

Within the HCA program there are different sets of internship requirements depending on your desired path. Please see the information below:

Students only pursuing the Bachelor of Science (pursuing the major only)

  • Internship requirement: 480 hours
  • This requirement is for students who are pursuing the HCA undergraduate degree alone.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration & Long-Term Care Administration Certificate (Two options: Accredited or Standard)

NAB-accredited pathway

  • Internship requirement: 1,000 hours (with a minimum of 501 hours in a skilled nursing facility).
  • The NAB-accredited pathway requires students to complete the HCA undergraduate degree, Long-Term Care Administration certificate, and 1,000-hour NAB Accredited HCA internship.

Standard (non-accredited) pathway

  • Internship Requirement: 480 hours
  • Students who are pursuing the B.S. in HCA undergraduate degree with Long-Term Care Administration certificate without the 1,000-hour NAB accredited HCA internship have the option to pursue the non-accredited pathway. 

Students pursuing the Health Care Administration Minor

  • Students who are pursuing only a Minor in HCA do not have a required internship.
