This 100% online graduate certificate in biology is designed for individuals pursuing careers in the biological sciences or education. The program requires 15 credit hours.

This program is ideal for those who need additional graduate credit in the field of biology for purposes of professional training, continuing education or accreditation, as well as those who plan to earn a master's in biology (all hours earned for the certificate will count toward your master's program in biology at WKU).

Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Biology requires the following:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Application & Fee: Students seeking a graduate degree must complete an on-line Application for Admission (Form A). This form is available from the Graduate School & Research Office wku.edu/graduate
  • Transcript Record: Graduates of accredited institutions other than WKU must submit an official transcript showing the completed degree to the Office of Graduate Studies.
  • No GRE is required

The graduate certificate in biology requires 15 credit hours (typically 5 courses). Those interested in pursuing the online master's in biology may count all hours earned in this certificate program toward their master's degree.

  • BIOL 500: Introduction to Graduate Studies and Research in Biology - This course introduces graduate students to research techniques and experimental design, studying current biological literature and methods of scientific writing. It is recommended that students take this course their first semester.
  • Biodiversity Course (one of the following)
    • BIOL 532 Behavioral Ecology
    • BIOL 534 Environmental Science Concepts
    • BIOL 545 Animal Communication
  • Biotechnology Course (one of the following)
    • BIOL 411G Cell Biology
    • BIOL 446G Biochemistry
    • BIOL 495G Molecular Genetics
  • Restricted Electives: 6 additional credit hours in approved graduate level biology courses, selected from the list below
    • BIOL 532 Behavioral Ecology
    • BIOL 534 Environmental Science Concepts
    • BIOL 545 Animal Communication
    • BIOL 411G Cell Biology
    • BIOL 446G Biochemistry
    • BIOL 495G Molecular Genetics
    • Other Biology Graduate Courses with advisor approval (Courses cannot include BIOL 516 Investigations/Biology, BIOL 598 Graduate Seminar, and BIOL 599 Thesis Research/Writing.
