Affordable Textbook Program


About

The goal of the Affordable Textbook Program is to make course materials available at no or low cost to WKU students by incentivizing faculty adoption of Open Educational Resources in place of traditional textbooks. Grant recipients will receive support and assistance identifying textbook alternatives and updating assignments from library faculty and CITL. This year we are offering four categories of grants, including an option for converting a course with multiple sections. 

Tier 1, $800: Adopt an open textbook

Replace current paid textbook with an Open Educational Resource (or mixed OER and library-licensed materials)

Tier 2, $1,500: Adapt an open textbook or create ancillary materials

Substantially adapt or remix an existing Open Educational Resource, or create ancillary materials to support an existing OER textbook (such as a test bank, homework assignments, or interactive modules); make these materials publicly available.

Tier 3, $2,500: Create your own open textbook

Write an open textbook and make it publicly available through TopScholar.

Tier 4, $5,000: Multi-section Conversion

This tier is intended for Foundations or other high-enrollment courses. The award will be given to faculty in a department who converts all sections of a high enrollment course to OER (or mixed OER and library-licensed materials) and results in OER adoption by multiple instructors.

    • Minimum Award: $3,000. Maximum Award: $5,000  
    • $1,000 maximum per team member

 Criteria    
Impact Savings Overall student savings is a primary goal of this initiative. 
  Enrollment Preference will be given to courses with high enrollment.

Frequency Preference will be given to courses that are taught every semester.
Presentation of Ideas   Applications should be thorough and clear; preference given for applications that include a plan for adopting alternative course materials.
Preference will be given to faculty who have not previously received an Affordable Textbook Initiative grant. Download complete rubric (PDF).
