     The Kentucky Folklife Program in partnership with the Potter College of Arts & Letters Cultural Enhancement Series and South Arts, will host the musical duo Larry & Joe, musicians and storytellers crafting a Venezuelan/Appalachian melodic fusion.

     On Thursday, August 31st, Larry & Joe will host a free music workshop open to the public at the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall - Room 189 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm central time. Musicians and singers at all musical levels are invited to participate; instruments encouraged but not required. 

     On the evening of Thursday, August 31st, Larry & Joe will perform a free concert at the same location, Fine Arts Center Recital Hall - Room 189 at 6:30 pm central time.  

     Larry & Joe, currently based in the Triangle of North Carolina, is the duo of Joropo maestro and Llanera legend Larry Bellorín (Monagas, Venezuela) and GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime star Joe Troop (Winston-Salem, North Carolina). Larry was forced into exile and is an asylum seeker in North Carolina. Joe, after a decade in South America, got stranded back in his stomping grounds in the pandemic. Larry works construction to make ends meet. Joe's acclaimed "latingrass" band Che Apalache was forced into hiatus, and he shifted into action working with asylum seeking migrants. Both men are versatile multi-instrumentalists and singer-songwriters on a mission to show that music has no borders.

     As a duo, these two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists perform a fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, guitar, maracas and whatever else they decide to throw in the van. The program they offer features a distinct blend of their musical inheritances and traditions as well as storytelling about the ways that music and social movements coalesce. Their engaging bilingual (esp/eng) program includes storytelling, humor, singalongs, and dancing. 

     “Hosting the musical fusion of Larry & Joe on the hill is an honor,” says Terrance Brown, Dean of Potter College of Arts & Letters. “We are happy to partner with South Arts and the Kentucky Folklife Program to offer this opportunity for a cultural celebration of music and story that transcends borders to the WKU campus and the surrounding Bowling Green communities.”

 The WKU Cultural Enhancement Series (CES) provides the campus and community the opportunity to meet some of the nation’s most influential artists and intellectuals. The goal of the series is to challenge our audiences, to expose them to new ideas, and give them new perspectives on our world.

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, South Arts is a nonprofit regional arts organization empowering artists, organizations, and communities, and increasing access to arts and culture. 

Established in 1989, the Kentucky Folklife Program (KFP) is the Commonwealth’s statewide public folklife program, with the mission to document, present, and conserve the diverse traditional cultures and heritage of Kentucky. In 2012, the KFP moved from Frankfort to the Department of Folk Studies and Anthropology at WKU.

     El jueves 31 de agosto, Larry & Joe organizará un taller de música gratuito abierto al público en el Centro de Artes Finas Recital Hall - Sala 189 de 2:00 pm a 4:00 pm hora central. Se invita a participar a músicos y cantantes de todos los niveles musicales; Se recomiendan instrumentos, pero no son obligatorios.

     En la noche del jueves 31 de agosto, Larry & Joe realizarán un concierto gratuito en el mismo lugar, en el Centro de Artes Finas Recital Hall - Sala 189 a las 6:30 pm hora central.

     Larry & Joe, actualmente radicados en el Triángulo de Carolina del Norte, es el dúo formado por el maestro del Joropo y leyenda Llanera Larry Bellorín (Monagas, Venezuela) y de tiempos pasados de la música Bluegrass y nominado al GRAMMY Joe Troop (Winston-Salem, Carolina del Norte). Larry tuvo que exiliarse a Carolina del Norte y es solicitante de asilo. Joe, después de una década en Sudamérica quedó varado en su tierra natal por la pandemia. Larry trabaja en construcción para llegar a fin de mes. Cuando el ascenso de su renombrada banda Che Apalache se detuvo, Joe pivotó para trabajar con migrantes solicitando asilo. Ambos hombres son multi-instrumentistas y cantantes-composadores versátidos con la misión de demostrar que la música no tiene fronteras.

     Como dúo, estos dos virtuosos multi-instrumentistas interpretan una fusión de música folclórica Venezolana y de los Apalaches en arpa, banjo, cuatro, violín, guitarra, maracas y cualquier otra cosa que decidan incluir en la camioneta. El programa que ofrecen presenta una combinación distintiva de sus herencias y tradiciones musicales, así como narraciones sobre las formas en que la música y los movimientos sociales se fusionan. Su atractivo programa bilingüe (esp/eng) incluye narración de cuentos, humor, canciones y baile.
